New to the forum and fishkeeping
« on: July 10, 2016, 02:37:25 pm »
Hello all,

I purchased my first tank (Fluval 200 Roma) 52 days ago and have been following the fishless cycle instruction until last Friday when all was complete and I can now turn 4ppm ammo into nitrate within 24 hours.  *applause*  *applause*  *applause* thought it would never end  *grin*

I purchased a full stock of fish with the help of my LFS yesterday and have joined the form for general chat and advice! Questions to come shortly  *grin*

 *cheers*

Dan

Welcome to the hobby and the forum Dan :) plenty of experienced members here who are willing to help and will only give you sound advice :)
Glad to see you followed the fishless cycle, its time consuming but much more beneficial :)
What are you currently stocking? And we like pics, pics are always good! :D

Thank you. It certainly was time consuming, the kids asked me almost daily if it was ready yet  *grin*

Current stock is 2 x Albino Bristlenose Pleco, 1 x Red Tail Shark, 5 x Dalmation Molly, 10 x Neon Tetra, 10 x Yellow Tail Guppies, 2 moonlight gourami (adopted)

The gourami were never part of the plan and I suspect fully grown will mean I would be overstocked? Correct me if I'm wrong, so they may need rehoming again in the not to distant future.

Can I ask why the LFS sold you soft water fish species and hard water fish species? The LFS does not sound very helpful, which one was it, Pets at Home by any chance?
Look after your fish and the water, do regular water changes & maintenance, do your research and the hobby will be rewarding.

It depends on your water hardness, you can find this out from your supplier website. Once you know we can then help you work out what needs done :)

Yeah it wont be suitable for the molly and guppy as they need hard water. The rest should be ok, just watch the shark as they establish a territory and can be a bit aggressive, and grow to about 6inches long.

    Hi again Dan

I would take the molly and guppy back to P@H for a refund or exchange.
Hard water fish species, such as molly and guppy, need hard water otherwise they will die very prematurely from organ failure.
The Red Tail Shark was also bad advice from P@H.

When all the existing fish are adult size then you will also be slightly overstocked and very under filtered.
So take those molly and guppy back for a refund and let the knowledgeable members here give you good, honest advice.

Tell them you bought the wrong fish .. ;)

    Good Luck!
    Stephen

ps I hope they advised that the plecs require wood ... did you buy some?
