Cleaning tank! Help!!
« on: July 30, 2016, 11:18:29 pm »
So bought my wife a 50l fluvial tank after she fell in love with my 300l aquarium! Her tank is freshwater and has been running a week now with water from my fully established tank! My questions are as in the picture there is white stains on the outside of the glass (which I can only assume is limescale, (it's a second hand tank)) also the top of the water is very oily, (A) how can I get rid of the limescale and (B) how can I get rid of the oily surface!

Tia

With limescale scrub it with a plastic scourer so you dont scratch the glass, nothing else i can really suggest.
As for the oily surface id use a tupperware and basically scoop it out.
Also established water wont help cycle the tank, you need mature media (sponge, ceramics etc) or cycle it fishlessly

Yeah it's being cycled fish less! The media has been used before for around 2 years but don't know how long it wasn't used for between then and us buying it! But I'm just going to let it do the fishless cycle anyway will test next week to see where perameters are! Won't be stocking till at least end of August anyway! I'll try the plastic scourer on the limescale, thanks for the reply!

No prob :) thats the only trouble with 2nd hand media, is the bacteria die off fairly quickly with no source of food.
Good luck with setting up the new tank for the wife :)

The ammonia your using for the cycle will be able to clean the glass quite well. Or a steam cleaner,  that's what I used on my scaly second hand tank.

The ammonia won't do anything as it's on the outside of the glassame! Recently acquired a steam cleaner so will try that, thanks!

I mean use the ammonia that you have in a bottle. It's a cleaning fluid and is great on glass.  *blink*
