Fish Identification - help!
« on: October 23, 2016, 06:15:35 pm »
Hi there, I've inherited a fish (long story!) - looks like a Cichlid, but can't identify it.  Can anyone help?  I've attached a photo of him.  He looks similar to a freshwater parrot fish but I'm not 100% convinced.

Does look a lot like a parrot cichlid. This link may help to check if it is.

If it's not a blood parrot, then it's a hybrid of some sort...... :(
There is a true parrot cichlid, and it isn't one of those ;) :)
Sent from my PC as I still don't understand the the logic for mobile internet usage ;) *grin*

Thanks both.  His mouth shuts and he's not at bulky as the parrot cichlids on the website but does look similar so must be a hybrid!

Next question is what tank mates would be suitable?! I'd be keen to get more cichlids but needed to identify him first.. have you got any suggestions?

How big is the tank? What's the ph/hardness of the water?

It's a parrot cichlid (the hybrid type).

Wow that is a really quirky Blood Parrot- he really does have a properly closing mouth and not the "pout" but it does seem to have the deformed spine and those blood parrot eyes!  I think s/he'll grow into a very handsome fish- good luck with him!

Tank is 125L, water is hard (approx 250ppm) and PH is 7.6.  There's also golden barbs in the tank that came with him.

    Thanks for the help all.

    You're gonna need a bigger tank........ ;)
125l won't be big enough for a blood parrot, at least 4' for one, and you'll only get a plec in with it perhaps.
