Whats wrong with my plecos?
« on: January 19, 2017, 10:30:55 pm »
Hi guys. So I've had a 70l tank setup for around a year now and I've had my Bristle nose plecos for around 3 months. In the last few days when he's been on the glass I've noticed his mouth is a different shapes like he's sacking extra hard and also has red marks almost like a rash on his underside. He's eating fine and spends most of his time under the wood in the tank but does come out and have a swim around. Does anyone know what's the problem?

Tank mates, 6 neon tetra, 6 guppys, 4 assassin snails
Tank also has live plants. The ph and temp is also fine

What sort of substrate do you have? I know some gravels and some sharp sands can cause damage to corys barbels and i imagine other bottom dwellers

Thanks for the reply. I thought that. I have sand in there at the moment. Maybe it would be worth switching it out

What is the ph? Because you've got neons which like acidic water and guppys which like alkaline.

Thasks for the replys. PH 8 and diet consist of mainly algae wafers with cucumber normally as a treat but it will also eat any sinking flakes

Well thats alkaline which i dont think plecos are fond of. Im assuming you have quite hard water as well then.

I'd try something veggie with a bit more fibre, like courgette or red/yellow pepper.
The sand isn't coral sand is it?

The Sands not coral sand it's just basic plain white sand from pets at home. I've done a few water changes and will try some different veggies.  He seems fine so far however he's not been on the glass yet
