Hi V!

I tried using the search function but all it returned was your most recent comment on this thread as it contained the word "McAlpine" haha oh well ...

If the rock is fizzing that means that it is not inert doesn't it? And means that it will affect the water chemistry doesn't it?

And with regards to the calcium, I guess I mean carbonate... Aquarium Gardens literally just says, in the characteristics bit, "gives little calcium" which is confusing in itself because does that mean it in fact gives off calcium or does that mean that it only gives off a little bit of calcium? and does it mean calcium carbonate? ... The ones that apparently don't give off calcium 'carbonate' are just listed as 'neutral' in their characteristics so, it's my first and only nag with Aquarium Gardens, to date. That they don't go into detail on their hardscape products all that well.

As always, any help is greatly appreciated :)

That is strange : my attempt returned what I expected (I think it's the thread that I wanted to point to). It's in the 'Breeding Discussion' board and the thread title begins : 'TFF Lonely Hearts'.  Does that extra info help? I can't link direct from this machine without risking insanity, else I would.

Well, I read all of that thread. Fascinating! Though I didn't catch an image with some Dragonstone rock in. Pagoda rock but no Ohko Stone (alternative name for Dragonstone - if you didn't know ;) ). There was only one image that I was permitted to see, luckily it was a blurry image of the tank but I didn't recognise a Dragonstone.

Anyway, isn't the stone non-inert? (Sorry I don't know the correct term for a non-inert rock)

Extremely belated congratulations on the many BN births  *grin*

Also, V!, I've provided a link below to a certain brand of "Clear Polyurethane Varnish" but I am not seeing anywhere about it being non-toxic or aquarium safe or fish/shrimp safe etc... I'm just being paranoid but I could use some verification :) and/or some assistance with finding a reputable, known-aquarium-safe varnish :)

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/181356646859?lpid=122&chn=ps&adgroupid=40176066202&rlsatarget=pla-280078132537&adtype=pla&poi=&googleloc=1006669&device=c&campaignid=738210941&crdt=0

Also, does varnish seal it? I thought varnish was 'breathable', if that makes sense haha

Inert rock is non reactive, otherwise its a reaction/reactive rock ;)

From my understanding 'inert' basically means 'safe-to-use' not that it won't affect your water, just that it's safe to use. Is that right?

You also get inert gases in chemistry (gasses that wont react), so if its an inert substance like the gasses it would be non reactive, at least thats my understanding of inert :)

    Thanks  *grin*

I very nearly just placed an order with Aquarium Gardens but backed out at the last minute because I was unsure whether it would be wise to put more plants in the shrimp tank before the cycle has properly finished due to the added plants probably requiring ferts or liquid carbon (when it arrives - ordered that today) to thrive due to there already being three separate plants in there. (Well, I put one plant in there when I started cycling, from my fish tank and then put a floating plant in there that was kindly sold to me by a friendly hoomin going by the pseudonym of Vale!  *grin*).

Sorry if that's a bit garbled, I've been sat on this here laptop all day ... I think I'm going to stop now, right after I've checked my Facebook games and NOT done anymore research or window-shopping *grin*  roflmao

    Night all!

See thee in the morning, I've no doubt haha  roflmao

I would plant now so that they are established for the shrimp.
What plants are you getting? Do they need a lot of looking after?

Nah, they're listed as easy to care for. I was getting a bit annoyed with how much was out of stock! but I can't complain, it must just mean they're really popular. Cryptocoryne Nevellii x 2 and Java moss x1 was what I had in the basket. Not many, I know, I might add one or two more ;)
Will go and have another look now  *grin* I'll post what I've decided on :)

    See EDIT at the bottom

Guys! Guys! Guys!  *grin* I've found a fish that I think could go in with the shrimp ... It's bloomin' adorable! Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus). It only gets to 1.2" (3cm) adult size and based on research I've done my parameters are suitable for it, just ... Anyone got any views or experience they think would be worthwhile noting? or does anyone think that they in fact wouldn't be ideal. Bearing in mind that Seriously Fish says that they would be suitable with freshwater shrimp and they seem pretty reputable and well-thought-out compared to other websites.

My tank size seems suitable, my ph is at the higher end of their suitable range but still in it and my hardness is bang centre almost of the recommended parameter guidelines. Temperature will be spot on too once I start lowering the temperature to 23-24 for the shrimp.

This is what Seriously fish says in terms of compatibility:

"It’s very peaceful, but doesn’t make an ideal community fish due to its small adult size. It’s easily intimidated by larger tank mates and won’t compete well for food with them. Many fish often kept in community aquaria, such as angelfish, gouramis and larger catfish will also find it an ideal snack. Keep it alone or in a community of other tiny species, such as similarly sized characins, cyprinids or perhaps some small freshwater shrimp. It also makes an ideal dither species for Apistogramma and other dwarf cichlids, as it tends to inhabit the middle levels of the tank."

Here's the link to two pages I've been cross-checking info on anyway :) let me now what you think, please :)
    http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/corydoras-pygmaeus/

    https://theaquariumwiki.com/Corydoras_pygmaeus

EDIT: Having looked into it further, I see that Seriously Fish recommends not keeping these fish with plants but dried leaf litter and driftwood which suggests that they prefer a soft, acidic conditions so, it is out of the question :( oh well, moving on now haha

Hi Pilgrim, I ordered from Aquarium Gardens a few weeks ago, & quite a few of the plants I ordered were showing as out of stock. I rang them up & they said that they should be through with their next shipment from their suppliers. I think I ordered on a Mon, or maybe Tues, & all my plants were despatched on the Wednesday after all. I suppose I'm just saying don't be put off by the out of stock notices - the sooner you order, the sooner they'll come.
