Advice needed!! Leaky tank
« on: March 24, 2017, 01:19:57 pm »
So my tank is leaking out of the lid. this is from the water evaporating and trickling down the front of the tank one its condensed. If this had been sealed when I first got the tank it wouldn't be an issue however it's quite hard to notice so the only way I knew it was happening is that the wood that the stand is made of has swollen. It's so swollen that the doors will no longer shut. I've messaged the people I bought it off (I bought it new) and the only reply I've got is to seal the tank with door foam and turn the tank temperature down to 21 which is too cold for my fish( Cardinal and glowlight tetras). Surely the stand at least should be replaced as its damaged?

I'm not sure what I should ask for in regards to compensation. A new stand? A different tank model that won't leak at a temperature of 26?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You have purchased the tank new from a shop therefore you have grounds to ask for another cabinet as the one they have supplied is not fit for purpose (assuming the tank lid is set up and fitted correctly), you may even have grounds for asking for a replacement tank if there is a known issue with the tank or lid . Your supplier has suggested sealing the tank with door foam, to me this would imply they are aware of an issue with this particular tank, tell them you are less than satisfied, give them a chance to rectify the situation and if they then fail to satisfy take it to the consumer protection people. https://www.gov.uk/consumer-protection-rights

    What tank is it?
Have you overfilled it? That's often the reason for too much condensation.
I am surprised that the seller has been that flippant with you! *mad*

Don't seal it with anything until you have got a decent response from the seller, you could invalidate any warranty you have.

    Thanks for the advice guys!
It's a Marina 84 premium. I thought that I had overfilled it at first too. But I dropped the water level down 2 inches and it was still happening.

    Hi franksy,

Attached is a pic of my solution. It's not ideal but prevents the drips. My tank is 21/22 degrees and it still happens. As long as I keep the water level lower than the lid then the kitchen roll is enough to keep things in check. There weren't many reviews about when I bought mine but I imagine it's a common problem.

Another solution could be to put a drip tray in. Something for the water to condense on and drip back in. I've never looked into it more as I'm happy with my bodge solution.

Well if I'd have noticed sooner I would of probably done the same! However now even if it dries out then the wood is still swollen and I can't close the doors!
    Thanks tails!

After a back and forth between the retailer and distributor they refunded my tank fully without me needing to return the tank. Good result for a week of messaging I'd say!
Thanks again for the advice guys

Good result, you could fit some condensation trays and build your own cabinet with the £££'s.  *cheers*
