pets at home are having a sale on fish tanks and they have http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/tropical-fish-tanks/love-fish-panorama-tank-40-litre-%28in-store%29?orderBy=1#

its reduced to £75 at the moment and you would only need to add the heater

my tank is only 24litres that i will be using for my male beta fish its a little over 5gall which everywhere i have read is the right size

There are usually ways to modify most setups, but like you say, Id be cautious with being too specific with certain brands so that youre not limited to spare parts (if ever needed).
Does it need to be brand new or are you willing to buy used? Obviously, buying new is a lot more convenient - but a used tank could save you money & help with the upgrade limitations. Dont wanna seem like Im teaching you to suck eggs haha, but you could do well to have a look through gumtree or there are even aquarium selling pages now on facebook where you might find a great bargain
Time is against me or I would do more research. I love a bargain but I'll need to get a tank ordered by tomorrow. She sort of sprung it on me, I was all set to buy her a charm bracelet!! She'd better not change her mind again or I'm stuck with a betta tank.....mmm might be quite nice I've resisted MTS till now ;) *grin*

    Thanks all thumbsup

Tell me about it. Mine change their minds all the time. Typical kids eh. Im sure she'll get loads more fun out of a fish than a bracelet so its probably a safer bet. Good luck with it though & keep us posted. I wont be getting my Betta for a while yet, so id love to know how you get on

Update. I think we have settled on the Dennerle Nano Cube 30L complete plus.

Good reviews especially with regards to the ability to adjust flow (We were worried about this with the Fluval Flex), quietness of filter, important for a bedroom, and quality of LED for plants. It also comes with substrate!

A nano aquascape project for me *grin* *grin* To be fair my daughter is super excited about setting the whole thing up, but the Betta is her focus. She has been doing loads of research and is becoming quite knowledgable.

    Thanks everyone for your help!
