I am sad for the other one, he had a safe environment with me but it is the best chance I could give him. This one is a right little active git, seems healthy, slight tear in one of his back fins but not bad so I'm not worried by this, he's approximately 1.5". I turned down an albino BN that was bigger because he wasn't moving much if at all. These are quite expensive I thought

Although it's a difficult decision, I am sure that you have done the right thing for Doug no 1. Hopefully Doug the second continues to settle well, & show off his personality for you.

That's not very kind, poor fella.  *grin*  BNs are pretty tough, I am sure he will settle in nicely.

He's very active, looks healthy etc. Im going to go out and source some food for him today, I didn't bother yesterday due to the heat and it being his settling in day. Dinsdale? I like that, it's unusual haha! I hope he grows well. I thought he was only 1.5-2" but my partner thinks it may be 3" when we saw him properly this morning. I hope he isn't a fussy eater!

I have just put a frozen bottle of water into the tank though, the temperature has hit 29* and I thought that may be a bit extreme for the sole guppy that I have bless it. Seems happy enough mind  *grin* bit random but has anyone had any experience with ice cubes? I thought if I made a tray of dechlorinated water cubes then it could be a quick and easy way to control tank temp

Doug and Dinsdale........ bit of an old "Python" sketch.
They normally eat everything, my old one ate snails sometimes.....

I have returned from my local shop with a cucumber in tow... and some chocolate for me  *grin* more bottles freezing in the freezer now for the main tank, it's boiling again but at least there is a breeze! I heard they need some spirulina based wafers, I shall try to pick some of these up during the week. Do I need to weigh the veg down for him? Doug used to eat the veg at the top of the tank by hanging off of it...

    I like Dinsdale too!

I've been floating a freezer cooler block in my tank in a bag, but (using my new digital thermometer) it's not cooling it down by much - only by 0.1C. My tanks are sitting around the 26C mark, same as my kitchen! May be worth turning your heater & lights off for now too.

My heater and lights are off, I don't tend to use the lights much if at all tbf. The frozen bottle cooled the tank a fair bit, it dropped from 29* to 28.6* if not a little lower and now I'm just waiting for the bottle to refreeze. Fish aren't bothered but I wouldn't like it to get any hotter. My tank usually sits between 25 - 25.5 anyway, I'm going to be lowering the temp to 24* to go with my new stocking suggestions :)

BNs will eat algae wafers but they aren't great algae eaters once they grow a bit. Fresh veg, cucumber, courgette, red pepper, mushroom, melon, almost anything really, some will foul the water more than others. I normally weight stuff down for the plecs but they go to the surface for mushroom, so I am sure they will for other veg too. The odd Cory pellet or bloodworm is happily jumped on as well.

Thanks! I've put a piece of weighted down cucumber in the tank currently. Waiting for him to find it. I am thinking that when he realises it is food then I will phase out the weight and he will figure it out then
