German Blue Rams
« on: October 23, 2014, 11:34:39 am »
Hi guys,

Fish less cycle completed a couple of weeks ago in my Roma 125l (80Wx35Dx45Hcm) tank.

I would like to add some German Blue Rams. Was in my lfs last week and the guy suggested I should wait to add them to a more mature tank.

In the meantime I have got 11 glowlight tetra and 6 sterbai cory in the tank.

Can anyone give me advice on when I could add the Rams and how many I could potentially add??

I was thinking of increasing the tetras to 15 and maybe adding a couple more sterba cory but depends on tank capacity.

Also I have seen conflicting reports as to whether German Blue Rams and glowlight tetras can be in the same tank?

Any advice on the above would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What are the water parameters (ph/hardness)?
Remember that the rams are bottom feeders as well as the corys, so you don't want too much going on down there. You only want a pair of rams, or one male and a harem of 3+ females, but young are hard to sex properly. Be sure that the blue rams (the country in front is normally where they're bred, not their proper name) are either British, German or Dutch bred (or wild), as I believe the Czech (it's either them or German, but I think I heard it was the Czechs) and the Far Eastern farms are breeding them in over-medicated tanks which means they end up with their version of the iridovirus.
Glowlights and rams are fine together as far as I know.

    Thanks Plankton.

    I have 6.8ph and 4gh 6kh.

Ok so I could keep the 6 corys I have at the moment and go for 2 or 4 Blue Rams.

Will have to look at places I can source british or Dutch bred Rams.

What's the difference between blue and Bolivian Rams??

They have the same Latin name, i assume they are the same species. I think they're just colour morphs.

They do have the same Latin name in some shops ;)

Bolivians are less fussy about their water parameters as regard to ph and hardness, but your water is fine for blue rams. :)

I'm in East Lothian, near Edinburgh. Know there are a few shops up here that have them or can get them in.

Out of interest what's a reasonable price to be paying from blue Rams?

Perfect thanks, the shop I was in at the weekend was asking £30 for 2, granted they were described as XL.

A lot of the imported blue rams are in single sex batches so try eBay as there is a breeder called ste12000 who might have them.
