No, not really, you may get a slight noise, but nothing load, I'm sat in a room with 4 externals ATM and I really don't notice them.

I don't have an external filter but i find the internal filters noisy with the flow of water on the top of the water.....We wouldn't want to have kidney trouble in this house........I hear the water flowing on the top of the water from this room where i have the computer,,,,because the 60L is in the hall....And the 240 Litre is in the extension in the kitchen and i can hear that in the other sitting room.....
So i know you mean the motor of the external one but i find mine noisey in that way.....If i reduce the flow the fish are not happy...They seem to need a good splash of water. aqua
