Hi, I have recently been to clear a house of a deceased elderly neighbour  and discovered an ancient coldwater tank of about 10 litres with filter and light which is a home albeit a poor one for two large goldfish. Despite the abundance of algae and the tank needing a really good clean ( the lady  has been ill for sometime ) the two fish although quite large seem remarkably healthy, but to my surprise, in the tank with the two chaps is what looks like a tiger barb or a green barb, quite happily swimming about. The tank is not heated at all, and I dont know how long he has been in there, im guessing a while. Ive removed the tank and have given it a clean and replaced the filter and all seems well. Ive put the tank in my daughters room but I dont know whether to leave this barb in there or move into my very peaceful community guppy tank as I dont really want any more fish in there (especially fin nipping ones) and I will have to get some more barbs as company ! Has anybody else kept barbs in water of room temperature ? Im thinking of just leaving things be but surely this cant be good for the poor little man ? ive uploaded a pic of the chap before I cleaned the tank just incase ive misidentified him......
thanks for any advice
Micky

If it is indeed a green tiger barb, hard to see, but it does look like they can go in room temperature, often down as low as 18C.

Personally I wouldn't put this fish in the community unless you want to see nipped fish.  Getting more barbs is the only answer, but over 6 to cut down the agression, even then they can be a pain.

Sad to see goldfish in such a small tank.  Back goldfish is a common, one on the right is a comet.   Should really be in a larger tank, larger the better.

thanks for that ! it is sad to see them in a small 10 litre and as I was not expecting any new house guests, they will have to wait a few weeks til i can finance a new, bigger tank for them. Thanks for the ID though ! i can only wonder how the barb got amongst them, fish were only the start of the problem as i also had to remove 3 cats, a budgie and would you believe a tortoise too
    cheers

it would take me forever to save for a huge tank, one goldfish needs 120 litres with another 30l for each of anymore bodies so at least 150 + for the other barbs you will be adding :)

The "120l litre" rule I've never really stuck with to be honest.  Can actually get away with a smaller tank just with a bigger filter and more water changes.  Obviously not the size above mind, but can be done.

The goldfish I keep in a 600L approx, might even more as it was custom made years ago, never really calculated the volume.  3 goldfish in the tank, but one is quite large about 12 inches which is my old common which is 12 years old :)

Could put more in the tank, but he's a cranky old bugger and terrorises new fish unfortunately.

Do you know of anyone with a nice pond for the goldfish, now would be a perfect time to aclimatize them with the warm weather, they would love the extra space.  I'm sure they will be fine in the mean time until you can figure what you are going to do with them, if they are happy together then good, it's just a matter of time when they all out grow the tank.  I agree the green barb should have friends, but he probably doesn't know any better, and if you get young barbs to go with him, I'm not sure what his/her reaction would be? Maybe he would be the daddy??

just an update on this post, ive managed to get the two goldfish rehomed in a lovely pond in a garden of a neighbour. Ive managed to buy a 48 litre river reef tank on ebay which im picking up on wednesday which will house the barb once ive cycled it of course and then im going to get him some company, probably 4 green barbs so hes abit happier, the missus is not delighted but my daughter is over the moon. Im afraid though, the sorry little chap is going to have to remain in the little tank on his own until its sorted.
Thanks again for the advice and if anybody can home the tortoise  rescued at the same time as the fish then let me know,he or she is very nice and at least 40 years old as the lady who has died has lived in the house over 40 years and according to her neighbour has always had him/her there
    cheers

Brilliant news, the gold fish should be fine with all this lovely weather and they will gradually acclimatise.

Congrats on the new tank, Im sure the barb will be fine on his own until you get the tank set up and cycled, he is still in his own environment in the mean time so he will be ok.
