Having just set up a 4' tank, I think the sand is without doubt the longest, most irksome, boring job of all, but looks SO good when it's done :)

Agreed, 7 hours washing the stuff
i put a layer of playsand down first then covered with proper slightly darker and bigger grain on top.
its taken the 200w heater 7 hours to warm it up and the water looks a bit misty even with the 380 lph filter running.
adding the 780 lph filter tomoz.
poped a few plants in but waiting for the roots to sink. been submerged for 24 hours..
ive not got a clue as to how the plants will grow or if they will root in as im finding it hard to get them to stay put. i dont want to us lead if i can help it.

The plant roots should take and be fine, if you are worried just keep an eye on them making sure the sand doesn't compact around the root system.  The big root should stay down eventually but it can take some time for it to become sufficiently water logged to do so

On sand - I think I posted elsewhere on TFF, you can buy a sort of premium ultra washed sand - I did and paid around 50% extra for it, but when I cost in the time I would have spent washing it I saved a fortune.
It actually said "No washing required", but most of us are suspicious of such claims, but true to its word after one quick wash it was fine and the water ran clear.

Definitley one of my better purchases.  :)

To be fair this has settled quicker and cleaner then i expected, i only changed 20% and topped up with cycled water.
my filter and heater have done the job for now i will upgrade to external soon.

most of the plants are in i need some more tall grassy types think vallis. some swords and java fern, and all other stuff from old tank is going in so will be moving it around again.

going to run it till the week end as i want to get more cycled water in a do more tests.

just unsure on what background to have.
    may do the rocks.

Prefer the rocky background of the two.

Water doesn't cycle, the filter does ;) :)

Ok is there any point me putting old water in the new tank?
i was under the impression i needed to get as much water in as possible after reading other posts.
and how long should it take to be ok with a cycled filter in there?

as for the background im hoping the plants will cover it up.

    thanks.

Water is useful to avoid ph shock, not for friendly bacteria :)

Shouldn't take much time at all with a mature filter, if any.
