Otocinclus wont eat :/
« on: October 21, 2014, 07:48:57 pm »
I have 3 small Otocinclus and I have tried different types of food but they wont eat any. My tank is not very old, that means there is not much algae for them to eat. They are always sucking a piece of Moorwood but nothing else gets theier attention. I have given them TetraPro Algae, Sera Spirulina Tabs, TetraPro Energy and Tetra Tablets TabiMin. Im worried because they can starve :/

Try a slice of cucumber or courgette, butternut squash, red pepper...

They will be eating micro organisms on the tank surfaces. Including the wood. Mine aren't that bothered by algae wafers. Have you tried giving them some blanched courgette?

they spend most of the time on the moorwood but they move sometimes and then return to the wood

Mine go crazy for decapsulated brineshrimp-eggs, bloodworms aso.
As said before to me are Oto's more "carnivorious" than everyone thinks they are.

I also gave them bloodworms, but they just ignored them. The Neon tetras ate them all.
Their bellies are not flat, but dont look very full either

Problem os they are wild caught ones having some difficulty to adapt. You could try the brineshrimp-eggs. They'll will partly sink on the plantleaves so they can scrape them of.
I'd blanch  zuchini and aubergine to soften it before you put it in. Regards Aad

I think mine might be too. I caught one trying to nibble a whiptail again last night. The whip shook it off pretty quickly. Think I might have to move the Otos again.
