A few months on.....

The mbuna tank is going well, thanks largely to good advice from you guys at the set up stage.

Although, I have lost a melanochromis cyaneorhabdos ‘maingano’. Lost as in vanished, disappeared! Assumed dead and eaten or dried up down the back of the tank cupboard – I can find no trace!

I decided to get rid of the maingano trio as the dominant male (The Boss) had turned into a real terror and was bullying everything and taking chunks out of tails. I had to take every rock out of the tank to net them (this is when I ‘discovered’ the missing fish). I took the opportunity to do a big clean up too, even though I do weekly water changes etc and the tank looks pristine, the amount of ‘poo’ in amongst the rocks was astonishing.

The LFS took the remaining pair back and I’m now in credit for my wild caught Afra lions cove females that are due in soon. It’s now a much more peaceful tank and the male L sp mbamba has benefited especially, he’s now much more confident and is displaying some excellent colours.

The tank is currently home to

1m wild caught. C. Afra sp. Lions cove (awaiting 2 wc females)
1m+1f Labidochromis sp mbamba
11 F1 juvenile yellow labs
1 bristlenose plec

I’m thinking of adding 4 P.Acei as there is a lack of blue now the mainganos have gone, and Acei are reportedly peaceful.

Cheers
Chris

In regards to the acei, that might be the problem, they may be to peaceful.
    C. afra can be aggressive. But you do have a big gang of yellows so it might work. Acei are interesting though

The Afra is the most chilled out fish in the tank, never a moment of bother from him. I suppose he may start to show off a bit when he's got a couple of females though!

A couple of group shots - not great photo's, but they both show my male L sp mbamba - A fish that usualy hides from the camera. He's showing his stripes more and more now the maingano's have gone:) He used to be almost completely black and quite timid:(

In the second of these you can see when his back half turns pale lilac, that's when he's showing off! The other one is how he looks most of the time now.

Just doing a water change and spotted a couple of unexpected fry!! They are about 10mm long - all i can think is that they are from the mainganos before i removed them two weeks ago - the 'dissapeared' fish was a holding female.
