the last bit is the slowest to start but when it does it goes really fast.

How long is it since the ammonia last went down?
If it's more than 4 days I'd be tempted to give it a kickstart to get it going again. Either a squeeze from a mature filter, or (if can afford it) a small bottle of Tetra Safestart or Seachem Stability.

Can you get a filter squeeze from somewhere then?
If not, one of the above additives will probably do the job.
It sounds as if they've gone dormant, what temperature are you at?

Current temperature is 32 degrees c. I have no idea where I could get a filter squeeze from, I don't know any other fishkeepers. Any idea why they would go dormant?

Every cycle is different. The amount of trace (phosphates, minerals etc) seem to have an effect on the bacteria. Mainly this is refreshed with weekly water changes, but, of course, you don't do water changes during the cycle.

Im in a town near middlesbrough in the northeast. I'm currently doing a 50% water change and starting again. Get the ammonia back to 0 and re add.

Ok just done 50% water change. Ammonia is now 1ppm and Nitrite 0.25ppm. Ill see what happens tomorrow.
If there is no movement tomorrow Im tempted to just start from scratch and put new filter media in.

Don't do that, it was working. Use a booster, the Safestart or Stability should move it.
