Could be... the livebearers (mollies, swordtails, guppies, platies etc.) tend to only live about 18 months - how long did you have him/her then?

Update: 30/10/2010...

Yesterday I lost a fish...

Cardinal Tetra (he was a couple of years old though)

Talked to Vess and Sanctax Terra (where DID that name come from???) on ChatBox and measured the water values:
NO3 = 25
NO2 = 0
NH3/NH4 = 0.25

Immediate water change 40l (ca. 20%) and double the normal dose of Tetra Aquasafe...
Don't you just love doing water changes at 11:30 at night?

This afternoon all seems well <insert crossed-fingers smiley here> and the values are:
NO3 = 12.5
NO2 = 0
NH3/NH4 = 0

since my daughter was wanting to help, we measured the "other values" too...

GH = 12
kH = 8
pH = 8

Update: 05/11/2010

Everything seems to have settled down nicely (touch wood).
I just got a huge "lump" of hornwort and some Assassin Snails from Sanctax Terra!

Where is the THANKS VERY MUCH smiley when you need it?

I rinsed the plants out a couple of times in tap water to get rid of any left overs - and found two more assassins, waiting to pounce!

So now I have: 2 "big", 3 medium, and 1 small assassins!

Put the plant and the snails into the tank...

It "rained" green stuff:

After a while, the green blob found itself a quiet corner to float in:

But three of the assassins are still playing it cool (I hope they're still alive)...

You were right about it snowing!

It should settle down once it's 'gotten used' to your water! Did the same to me the first time I stuck it in my tank.

As towards the assassin's... They look okay to me. Maybe someone can shed light?

Ok - so the assassins have all "vanished" overnight... I guess they were alive after all!

The green clump of plant has lost even more needly-things - they are all nicely blocking my filter inlet.

Had you just got the assassins? They have trapdoors, and acclimatise themselves slowly, so don't move during that period.

The assassins are now officially, "in hiding". I saw one for a few minutes this morning, turned my back for a few seconds and... poof... he was gone again!
I guess they're sub-surface-sand-surfng!

Umm... I keep having to fish the needls away from the filter input.

The green blob seems to be more like a green knot now - almost all the needles are gone.

I've ordered some Easy Carb - and as soon as that arrives I'll start dosing with Johnny's ferts too.

Thanks! I do like the cardinals - i've got some neons in there too - but the cardinals are much nicer!

Perhaps it is the stress of being in a new environment then. I'm reading online and it seems that sometimes it sheds its leaves before it establishes itself. By chance, are the bushy ends still intact?

I'm sure the easycarbo will help it along and Johnny's ferts will make you have to throw out that plant by the arm-full.

Yeah - I think that the busy bits at the ends look ok - I'm not risking touching it though to have a proper look!
