Thanks I've got 2 1/2 inches to play with so the soil is just under an inch and and the rest will be gravel once it's washed.  Do you suggest I was pool filter sand before use?

I only use Unipac sand but I believe pool sand is virtually the same but a little less expensive, so you can use either safely.
I prefer the Unipac sand as I can have the colour of my choice which is the silica sand, but each to their own. ;) (see my colour chart below)

Stephen you sent me the chat in a past thread, all the thanks though.  However I was asking do I need to rinse the pool filter sand?  Do you rinse you sand first?

Always thoroughly rinse the sand, until the water is clear.
It may take several rinses before it is clear.
Far better to have the cloudy water on the garden than in the tank ;)

Yes it's been a while, asking questions, gaining confidence, spending money on equipment.  The list goes on....  It's been a long time coming however rushing this kind of thing can be a disaster I guess.  I have my api test kit at the ready along with ammonia...

Those are the air bubbles running along the join of the substrate separation.  This is the sand side as its 2 and 1/2 inch deep so to stop the sand becoming anaerobic.

Day 3 of the nitrogen cycle start up and still just topping up ammonia.  I got home from work and found the evaporation of my water quite fast, due to tank heaters up high.. It was only around 2L so I just added tap water as the return pump wasn't getting enough flow.  (Should I have added any tap water conditioner as it was only a small amount of water)?  I topped my tank with glass to help keep condensation low.  I will be adding some moss as soon as I can get to my LFS.  (Wet Pets) in Romford.  I also ordered Alfa grog as I have a sump tank so to help the bio load.  Just await nitrite readings so I can half the ammonia ppm from 4 down to 2ppm....

Always add a little conditioner (get a syringe to help), especially during the cycle as the bacteria won't be established enough to cope with the chlorine.

Day 4 of the fish less cycle and I'm up at 4ppm on ammonia and I believe just about .25ppm on nitrites.  To me this is a sign that it's on it way (bacteria growing on sponge filter).  . Just had to top up conditioned tap water as that is going fast due to temp at 30 degrees (evaporation).  Just another day in the office...
