Shrimp tank log
«
on:
February 17, 2016, 10:24:01 am »
So ive been toying with the idea of a shrimp tank for a while now. Upon adding some new plants to my 40l I noticed the shrimp were acting odd despite me giving the plants a good wash. So once moving them to my 10l qt I thought may as well get the shrimp tank started.
Bought myself a 19l and hid it at the other half's house until I could sneak it round the mine. Today was the only day I could slip it in without anyone noticing . Washed out the black gravel by dennerle and put that in the tank while I took out as much of the original water from the old tank and moved the shrimp out of the way
Eventually with all the water, filter, heater, stones, leaves and plants moved over this is the end result
There wasn't any lights that came with it that was from a borrowed phone. May look into that in future something I could clip on to be more for seeing the shrimp than for plants really but we'll see, depends what I put in but hopefully just low requirements for the shrimp to hide in, Lfs is going to order me the aqueal mini pat filter for me.

Nice one.
Don't forget to make sure the plants haven't been soaked in snail killer.
As a note Aquarium Gardens don't use anything nasty like that.

Didn't even mean to get plants that's the funny thing I'm ever hopeful he'll be getting more panda corys ordered in (think he's forgotten I'm after some tbh)
Think they may have to be if they're just for the shrimp tank. Don't mind letting them root up in the main tank though.
Just watched the little ghost shrimp chase after a cherry and try to catch it so he's on time out.... don't know where to put him now though don't want him trying to catch them not as many places to hide in 20l :\ wonder if it'll be safe to move him back over yet (yes he is in the jug, so hard to spot at times)

Well time out resorted in a jail break and the ghost shrimp decided to relocate to under the bedside table where I found him this morning so shrimp tank in down to two and ghost shrimp has gone for a long flush (he was completely dried out I did half heartedly put him back in the jug as a just to be sure but not response
)
Last night's parameters were
Ammonia 0.25/0.5
Nitrite 0.2 or higher
Nitrate 0.4 or higher (normal)
Today's after 10l wc
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrite 0.1/0.2
Nitrate same

I pulled the old sponge out of the running filter and squeazed the water out of it into a jug. That water was then poured over the new filter then placed in the shrimp tank and the old sponge one put back into the filter.

I would have just squeezed it into the filter without the extra jug transfer, but still, it should cope with two or three shrimp.....

Not useful for cycling, but can be ok once there's an established colony. Certainly not worth spending money on......

Of course -.- may just keep putting 5ml in so that if any of the bacteria is trying to grow it gets some help. Any water change from the main tank I'll give it a squeeze into the shrimp tank. Doesn't half make it all cloudy though
current poxy filter doesn't clean up very well.
Don't know what I'm going to do when the shrimp filter arrives on Friday just run the two side by side for a bit ??
