fish in 30L have issues with feeding
« on: October 11, 2016, 07:38:32 pm »
So I've always had a little difficulty feeding the 30L. It's not that the fish won't eat but they are a little...slow? I have three CPDs, two hillstream loaches, and one pygmy cory who I'm rehoming as all his buddies croaked and I don't want his fate to be the same. Anyway firstly I'm not sure how to feed the hillies. They seem pretty active but I never see them eat. I occasionally break up a mini algae wafer and scatter it but usually my ramshorn snails always seem to get to it before the fish do. Seconfly whenever I sprinkle fish food in the CPDs will just look at it but make no attempt at eating it before it's too late and it's been sucked by the filter. I've seen some people put small petri dishes in their tank for feeding their small fish and to slow any thieving snails down but since I have two internal filters the current is strong enough to simply whisk all the food out the moment I squirt it in :/. The fish have been doing ok for now but if there is an easier way to ensure they are well fed then I want to know about it.

Put some veg in for the loaches.
What "sprinkles" are you putting in for the CPDs?

Oops lol sorry! The food I "sprinkle" for them is TetraMin Granules. Yeah I have to crush it between my fingers or else it's still a little troublesome for the CPDs to eat. I'll cut up some zucchini for the loaches. Is there any veg they prefer or?

You have two filters in your 30litre? ... I think that could be a little too much, isn't it? I have one reasonable sized internal filter in my 170litre and that just about manages (I think it filters about 250-300litres per hour or something like that). Though I do use the filter current to disperse the food about the tank effectively, it doesn't "whisk" it

My CPD love frozen bloodworm, daphina, brineshrimp etc i also feed NLS thera pellets that i grind with a pestle and motar that they also munch quite happily. The pellets are only 0.5mm but probably a bit big for the CPD on their own.

Grinding the pellets sounds like a good idea, but I would probably get the TetraMin Baby for such small fish.

The corner filter does a poor job on it's own and I've read that hillies like strong aerated currents which is why I added the second one. The LFS near me stocked a mini external canister filter that I want to get to replace both filters but atm I can't afford it. I though it wouldn't hurt to increase the fiktration in the tank since nano tanks get dirty quicker than big ones and tye extra filtration would improve the water quality.

Yes I've been trying to find baby food to give them but currently haven't had any luck. Actually all of your replies reminded me to go buy a pestle and mortar so thanks lol. I needed one anyway to help grind algae wafers for my fan shrimp.
