Thanks Suelo
Thats our thinking Ian, just going to keep an eye on her now, as thats 2 fish i've lost in my tank in a fortnight. And as you say the CPDs have a habit of just dying, so i think i will be leaving them, at least for now.

Well didn't have to leave it long...lost the female monday, found her amongst the plants when doing the changes, struggling to stay upright and swim properly. Quickly put her in the hatchery while i went to setup the QT, she looked a bit pine coney and bloated as well :/ by time i got half way through setting up the qt she'd gone, not sure what happened. I'd seen her sunday night feeding and swimming about so initially thought she'd eaten a bit much (i have seen them eat an entire bloodworm before now!). Wasn't until monday i noticed something was wrong. Either way so ends my current CPD adventure, shame as the first two i had were 2 of my longest running fish.
Everyone else is ok, rainbows pestering each other, think they've grown a bit and one of the 3 males has a slightly longer first dorsal than the other 2, so starting to be able to identify them :) cant say the same for the females though lol
Bubba and his females in the 180l are are doing well, seen a bit of displaying and tail slapping earlier, the yellow female still guarding her corner, i think one of the other females has claimed the other corner and the third seems to be using the gap under the moss ball at the front (against the glass) and under the wood as her area. Neither one is guarding like the yellow one though.
Marsellus is looking pretty happy (if thats possible!) in his tea stained tank, and the plants look as if they're settled.

Sorry to hear about the CPD. Have you had a gander at the parameters including ph?
I am hitting my tank with 10-20% daily fresh water along with the weekly 50%, might even chuck in some cuttlefish bone as well as part of the war on ph, kh & gh all dropping rapidly. I suspect that it's something to do with the nitrification bacteria but have no idea what to do lol.

Anyway I hope that you have seen the last of this latest bout of luck and things start picking up for you.

Thanks guys, it has been a mixed few weeks. Its just been my tank that has had all the upset :/
I always check the parameters immediately after a death, all spot on (0 ammonia 0 nitrite 40/80nitrate, ph 7.4).
Your problem has completely baffled me Newbie, just cant make head or tail of whats happened. Hope you get your issues sorted soon

Newbie, I'd probably ditch the nitrifying bacteria source and go straight for a ammonia source but I'm not sure how that would tie in with your cycle, whether you'd need to start again or what. What is your ph from the tap after your water has sat for 24 hours? (put some fresh tap water in a cup/glass and leave it to sit for 24 hours, stirring occasionally).

Pulling the positives from your experience GL, at least it has just been the tank that's had a few upsets :)
I hope you manage to iron out the problems soon and get the tank back on track :)

Just catching up, sorry to hear you lost your last CPD, as Newbie said, I too hope things pick up for you now.

I've been looking at a micro rasbora - think it's called the emarald dwarf rasbora - wonder if this is the one Plankton was thinking of? I thought they looked amazing, but seriously fish mentions they might not compete for food so well. I really like the look of them from the photos, I'm wondering how they might fare with my platys.

Screenshot from seriously fish website attached - hope this is allowed.

What do you mean pilgrim? I have read that the nitrification bacteria can drop the ph.

Thanks Suelo, i think that might have been the one Ian meant. They're local to lake inle which is a hard water lake :) apparently most people make the mistake of rasbora=soft water with them. I really should probably look at a few of the other inle species on that note lol

I have 10 emerald dwarf rasbora, though I understand they've been reclassified away from rasbora to something else (forgotten).

They're really timid and love a lot of cover. Great active guys to watch quietly though and if you like small fish definitely get these. I've got 10, I wish I could go bigger I think that'd be awesome.
    60L – 5 threadfin rainbows, 3 emerald dwarf rasbora
    500L – 1 fire eel (~18"), 7 Melanotaenia boesemani, 14 Melanotaenia trifasciata/Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi.
