Neon Tetra Question
« on: August 31, 2011, 05:39:16 pm »
I got back from a weeks holiday late yesterday afternoon and last night completed my water checks which were all fine; pH of 6.6, Ammonia and Nitrite of 0 and Nitrate of 40.

This morning I noticed an issue with one of my neon tetras.  Basically it does not appear to have any red colouring and it looks like it has been erased; the blue colouring is as normal.

Any ideas?  Is this something to be concerned about?

Did you have your lights on timer when you were away?

    Neon Tetra Question

Don't know about neons but my cardinals lose their red colour when they are stressed! Have also noticed that first thing in morning after they have been 'asleep' their colours seem to fade slightly (although that may just be my imagination haha)

Yes. My lights were on timer while I was away.

I have a school of 8 and this is the only one not looking right.

Any other discolouration? White patches for instance?

There doesn't appear to be any other discolouration.  It just seems like his red light is not working but his blue light is fine.

A sad day.  The fish in question started becoming more isolated from the other neons so having read about NTD I tonight made the difficult decision to remove it and give it some Clove Oil.

I have now noticed another neon losing a bit of its red stripe so will keep an eye on that one and again remove if it gets worse. Hope that it will not wipe out the entire school.

    Other fish look fine though.

The other neon that I referred to has lost a bit more of it's colouring but I have noticed that it looks 'fat'.  It is about twice as wide as the others.  Has anyone else come across this?

in tetras you will generally find that the males are slender and the females are more 'rounded'  ;)
