All about white spot and it's treatment

Hi,
I forgot to mention, since noticing the spots we did a 25 % water change this is on top of the usual weekly 20% and the fish seemed to have lost majority of spots but when we looked again tonight the spots have re appeared, the red fin shark has a few tiny spots on it tail.

I use API test kit-
PH- 7.4
Nitrite- 0ppm
Nitrate- 0ppm

The spots are that tiny i cant get a picture at all!They sometimes arent even noticeable and then when the fish turns you can see them vividly??? Maybe this is normal with whitespot?

How long have you had the tank?

Are the spots like grains of salt? If so it is probably whitespot. You able to get a pic so I can make sure?

If it is Ich, I recommend doing a really good gravel/sand clean and a 50% water change to help remove free floating parasites. I would also buy some Seachem Paraguard, you can buy it online from Swell.co.uk and Charterhouse Aquatics.

Sorry forgot to say we've had the tank running since January. They do definitley look like grains of salt. You can see them siting on top of the skin. I have got a pic which is very bad.......................how hard is it to get a picture of a fish 

You can just see a flash of white but have to zoom in to get a picture! Im just going to LFS to get treatment! Will keep you updated.

I have garlic liquid which I use to soak food in - should I add some of this whilst treating ! ??

What else is in liquid garlic? It should be pure, fresh garlic really.

Hi all

Think my cardinals have white spot!
Any suggestions re medication?

I'm a newbie, tank stocked after fish less cycle for about 3weeks now, lost a few cardinals and the spots have only just become visible.

Water has been
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrites 0ppm
Nitrates 40ppm
Ph. 8 ish (I know it's high)

I have tried getting a pic but it's too difficult at the moment. I'll try again in a bit.

well after saying everyone was happy yesterday i came home from work tonight to find whitespot on my male betta, no one else has spots and he didn't this morning, i only did a 20% water change and gravel vac yesterday so i just went straight in with treatment with king british original.
i had a problem with whitespot about 3 months ago on a goldfish and i was just too late to start treatment and i lost him, hopefully fingers crossed i have caught it early and treatment will be successfull and i won't have any fatalities

99% sure, white spots on fins and he is spending a lot more time near the bottom of the tank (i did notice this late last night) and scratching himself against the ornaments, seems a lot more tempremental today not letting anyone near him without flaring up, also just had another good look and a couple of the females have started with a couple of spots too

Hey, got some of this whitespot myself, bad on 2 snakeskin barbs, light on 2 others and the rest of the tankmates seem clear.

RTBS, plec, 12 harlequins and12 smakeskin barbs. The last half dozen snakeskins added seem to be the affected fish (more assumption than fact but I feel most likely). My heaters cant get the tank over 30deg, the thermostats wont go high enough to top 30deg unfortunately. 27 deg is it which doesent help.

Currently medicating with exit, not any other options with snails in there and the plec, figured a reasonably clear shot of one of my infected fish would be useful for the thread.



Cannot really remove the fish as I don't have a reliable quarantine tank, also the damage done to the décor would prob be extensive as the tank is well planted hence the meds.

Removing the affected fish isn't an option, as it's already in the tank, so the tank does need to be treated. You may need a second course to clear it right up.
