Hi there.

There hasn't been any comments in this thread for a while so hopefully someone will see this and maybe shed some light for me.

I understand the recommendations are to use seachem prime as your dechlorinator when using purigen but I wondered if anyone could clear some things up.

Despite fairly extensive searching I haven't been able to find out if "tetra aqua safe" contains the amines that could have a negative effect on purigen, can anyone yet confirm if tetra aqua safe is good to use with purigen? I have emailed tetra with this question but no reply as yet.

I wouldn't want to risk adding the purigen to the tank even if there is a slight risk that chloramine may be be released as a by product of the aqua safe and purigen.

Would the method of replacing the aquasafe with prime be as simple as just using prime for the next few weeks in the water changes? Or is that a little overboard?

 Cheers

You can often find out what's in a branded preparation by looking at its Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). So that's what I had a go at.

I Googled "Tetra Aquasafe MSDS" and downloaded the .pdf file that appeared.

Apparently Tetra Aquasafe contains: EDTA ; formaldehyde ; and kollidon.

I hadn't a scoobie what the latter is, so Googled for that. It seems to be polyvinyl acetate and povidone.  Povidone meant nothing to me either, so a further Google told me that it's polyvinyl pyrrolidone.

Pyrrole seems to be something that's used to 'activate' formaldehyde as an alternative to using an amine in the 'Mannich reaction', therefore it's reasonable to suppose that pyrrole isn't an amine. I'm not a chemist, so don't take this as gospel, but I can't then see that Tetra Aquasafe contains any amines.

I see that there are plenty of references on the web to people changing from Tetra Aquasafe to Seachem Prime, but I haven't chased any down because my brain hurts from my kollidon adventure!

You may well find the specific answer that you need from Seachem's site : it's usually pretty good - and they usually respond quickly to individual questions if you can't find what you're looking for.

Many thanks Mr Vale. My research is obviously not as in depth as yours yet but I'm sure it'll come with the experience. I really appreciate your time on this.

OK so I've had the following response from tetra today....

    Hello Glenn,

Thank you for contacting us. Yes, it can be used with Purigen.  We get this question a lot through our website Q & A.

So along with your research and the above from tetra, that gives me the confidence to go ahead and put it in my filter.  I'm going to put it in between the cirax cage and the coarse blue sponge, unless anyone has any advice to the contrary?

I have a trigon 190l. Purigen can be bought in 100ml pre bagged portions and  It suggests that a 100ml will treat up to 400 litres of tank water for up to 6 months. I ended up buying 2. I have to say along with an improved maintenance regime my water is now fabulously clear.

One 'cup' of water is an American measurement, it equates to 8fl oz in English.

I've just attempted my first purigen recharge...the two bags have been in a 1:1 solution of water and thin bleach for 24 hrs but the beads are still quite stained. The purigen has only been in for 3 months ish so I've replenished the solutions and I'll leave it for another 24hrs.
Has anyone else gone that way before ? Will it be OK for another 24 hrs?

Yes I've had to leave it in the bleach solution for 48hrs before. I find giving the sachet an occasional swish and squeeze helps. Not great for your skin though, wear gloves.

In my juwel filter the purigen goes between the two baskets, basically in between the handles of the bottom one. If you know what I mean?

Don't use thick bleach, as this often has added scents and other stuff in it. Thin bleach works fine and is cheaper.
