I use wood vivariums for mine as they retain heat better than glass (Matthew is the exception, his is all glass as he needs high humidity).

If you fancy a Leopard Gecko then this is how my Ozzy is set up...

Wooden vivarium, 2ft wide, 1.5ft high, 1.5ft deep...

For heat he has a heatmat under his substrate that covers roughly a third to a half of his floor. He needs a cooler end as well as a warmer end.

The heatmat is plugged into a thermostat so you can keep the heat at a regular temperature.

The substrate is a sand with a layer of wood chips on top.

Although mainly an evening/night time roamer he has a uv light I put on for a few hours a day. The exposure to uv helps to prevent metobolic bone disease.

I have a themometer to keep an eye on his temperature plus a hydrometer to keep an eye on the humidity.

See pic below... he has a hide on the right that sits on top of the heat source so he uses that as his bedroom...

In addition I have various fake plants to break up the area plus to look nice.

And extra hide on the left that doubles up as a climbing platform.

And obviously a water bowl.

They do shed as they grow hence the need to increase humidity when he does. The moist air helps the shed to come off easier. The water bowl over the heat source helps. Plus you can add a damp moss in his bedroom hide too to help up the humidity especially when he is shedding.

Food can be crickets or small locusts. Mealworms are a nice treat too. They do not eat veg or salady stuff.

Sounds far more complicated than it actually is. As long as humidity, heat, clean water and food plus good husbandry of his home is maintained you can have many happy years watching them grow.

And once used to you they are usually very happy to be held etc. Can be quick and skittush when young but calm down as they age.

Keep feeding the veg Ruth, he will bulk up.
Courgette or red/yellow pepper will be best while he bulks out again.
He doesn't look too bad from the side, so should recover nicely.
