Forgot what the proper name is.
« on: January 30, 2018, 08:45:18 pm »
Hi all,

Brought 3 of these catfish as tiny babys early last year and now completly forgot what they are called.

Any help would be great.

Btw if you want catfish that are great with others these boys are great with swordtails, Placy's Neons and a few other peaceful fish.

Many thanks.

I used to have these !
I can tell that is a male too because he has the thickened orange pectoral fin :)
Females don’t so you should be able to tell what you have.
I love Hoplos I would hope to get some again one day when I upgrade my tank!

Never knew that. I have 3 in my tank. Called them Henry, Harvey and Harry. Not noticed the orange fin so maybe its 3 girls I might have...?

WEll there are a few different types in the family I think so I’m not sure if every one has the orange fins. The ones I used to have were megalicis thoracata (probs spelled that wrong ) I don’t know if yours are that same type. Or yes maybe they should be Henrietta, Helen and  Harriet !

So hoplosternum thoracatum is the old Latin name, they were all reclassified  (I remember reading this all in a copy of practical fishkeeping years ago!) and Megalechis thoracata (this time I googled spelling!) is the new name for what was previously hoplosternum thoracata.
    I couldn’t think of a female Harvey name !

They must be all girls then if they are thoracatas unless they are young, I think my male developed his orange fins after he was about a year old and he was defo a thoracata.

I really want some more now!

I did wonder if they were the same... haha.

Only bought them 10 days ago from LFS so guessing by that and by size they are readonably young still.

Time will tell if I have to do a rename... lolol

Ah so yes I think you’ll have to wait and see if Harvey is a.... Harley?
It’s quite cool that you can tell the difference though I think.
