ID of my newest pleco addition
« on: February 17, 2018, 09:53:49 pm »
Hello

Just wondering peoples opinion on this Pleco i bought from the shop today, i couldnt resist, but i bought it cause the label said it was a tiger plec ( which i have since learnt it is not) but the girl at the till said its leopard frog pleco, and somebody else in the shop said it was just a standard leopard pleco, either way i love the looks of it and he fits into the tank well, would be just good to know what i got

Thanks

It looks more like a Butterfly Plec, and a lot of shops sell them so I'd go for that. Lots of fresh veg if it is :)

Don't think it's a Leopard Frog. Picture of mine below.

Looking at the evidence you guys have shown, I am now leaning towards it being a butterfly also, his head is too flat for it to be a candy stripe i think.

How often should i be feeding veg?, i tried feed it a cucumber last week and it wasnt the least bit interested, maybe i got a picky pleco, any other veggies i should try?

Candy stripes and butterflys are pretty common at fish stores, and it does look like both of them, but the head pattern sways me towards Butterfly at the minute however it looks small so could change quite easily. They need different diets so hopefully as it ages it should become clearer. For now id offer bloodworm and veg to it and see if it shows a preference.

General fish shops seem to have no idea when it comes to Plec ID.

Courgette and peppers, if its a Butterfly. Maybe try adding them at night time and keep an eye on it.

    just a quick update.....

Been trying putting some different vegetables on the tank the last couple of night and went back to trying cucumber again tonight, boiled it for about 10 minutes, let it cool down put it down in the tank and he slowly swam up to it, i was sat there getting all excited, then he stopped.... and stayed stopped for the 3 hours, started to get concerned as his body colour changed also to a darker colour.....finally went to put my hand in to try and get any movement from him, cause i have been expecting the worse, and still no movement could pick him up, still no movement....

    RIP...you was my wifes favourite....

Completely baffled as to why this happened. checked water and nothing has changed
