Api GH test kit alternative
« on: November 06, 2018, 06:58:10 pm »
Is there a reliable alternative to the api gh test that has a more obvious colour change, struggle with mine and my eyes.

I thought Clark degrees indicated carbonate hardness.
One degree Clark is equal to 14.3 mg/I CaCO3

Yup, and as 1° dKh is 17.83mg CaCO3 it means your water is a bit less than 3° dKH, so reasonably soft, pretty much same I got here in this part of Italy. Allowes me to keep most kind of fish without having to use R/O (except for topping up evaporation in summer)

    I use this:
    https://www.cactus2000.de/uk/unit/masswas.php

Works out at 2.4dgh (german hardness, means Paul is right with his calculation ;) ) so very soft, general hardness (the amount of dissolved minerals) is measured in degrees german, french or clark(english), the KH is the measure of the carbonates and as far as i know is only measured in dKH...i may be wrong

Is the 2.4dgh what my test kit should be reading. Or is the gh that the kit measures something different.

Can you post a link to the water company's report?
Anway I would think it is safe to assume your water is soft. I tend to use a TDS (total desolved solids) meter, it is basically a conductivity meter under other name, it gives an instant readout (in parts per million or in micro Siemens) that gives a general idea of how many ions are desolved in the water. They are cheap (not much more than a tenner) and generally reliable

If your using conditioned tap water, your hardness would be 2.4dgh and thats what the GH test kit would read (athough they tend to read in 1 degree increments, no smaller).

I have a tds meter, reads around 110 when conditioner added.I need an idea of GH as its a shrimp tank.
Thanks gingerlove thats what i was after, what the kit should be telling me.

A TDS reading of 110 would work out at between 6-7dGH or there about.
