Hi Paul and welcome
I personally don't know the answer but will ask a few questions which may help someone diagnose the problem.
You're in Preston (Lancashire) where the water is moderately hard at approx. 8.5dGH.
1. What is the tank water temperature?
2. What is the size of the tank and what filter do you use?
3. What fish (species and numbers) do you currently stock (example: 8 x neon tetra)?
Thanks

Possibly a form of columnaris?
They do not look good.
As well as the information asked for by Stephen, what's the diet?

OMG worst I have ever seen.
Melafix and Pimafix won't do anything.
Get a strong anti bacterial med.

Definitely get a proper medication, esha or myxazin.
