What kind of plec is this?
« on: March 01, 2019, 09:01:41 pm »
So looking at local people selling fish and come across someone breaking down their tank and selling on some fish two of which they list as 'common plecs' but the plecs have very distinctive white patches. I know stressed out plecs go pale in patches but I've never seen such sharp contrast and wondered if you guys have seen that before. Are they just super stressed out commons or maybe they just have miss-IDed the plecs.

Looks like a very stressed common, well one of the pterygoplichthys anyway.
Sent from my PC as I still don't understand the the logic for mobile internet usage ;) *grin*

Rusty Plec, Hypostomus cochliodon. The colours are normal. There’s a few species in the ‘cochliodon’ species group. They have a higher back than other Hypostomus, which does look a bit like Pterygoplichthys. They also have spoon shaped teeth like Panaque, designed for rasping wood.

oh interesting thanks for the info blackghost! I'm not clued up on my L number plecos but did think it looked wrong for a common! if I didn't already have a common myself I'd probably got for them but don't think my boy will want to share his caves. ^_^' he gets grumpy when the red-tailed shark tries to get in there let alone other plecos.

Wow I can see why it is confusing, that plecos markings are so similar to what my Sailfin looked like when he was stressed.

Yeah, I just thought the light patches where just too clean for stress markings. I really need to get myself one of those pleco posters with all the different types on.
