How many cichlids to add at once

(1/1)

steveb21:
Planning in advance here, thought I’d ask the questions whilst I am in planning stage.

I will be running a fishless cycle (tank info is on dig)

Lake Malawi

I like the look of;
Demasoni
Electric Yellow
Blue Zebra
Red Zebra

Questions

Are the above compatible together?
How many could I keep in my 55g tank?
How many should be added in at once?
Would it be better to buy all juveniles?

plankton:
You should be able to get around 25-28 in there.
If you're fishless cycling then you could add them all, but if you can't afford that much then no less than 6 at a time to spread the aggression that will be there.
I would buy them as young as possible and watch them grow.

*agree*

Thanks both.

The fish I suggested ... a good mix?

Buying them young as possible would mean not knowing what sex they are, will this cause issues further down the line?

Thanks

plankton:
I'm not sure about the species mix with Rift Lakes.
I know you can't mix veggies with carnivores, and that the same family species will interbreed, that's about it.
