Bristlenose Fry
« on: April 21, 2019, 03:44:53 pm »
Hi all!

I'm currently experiencing my first breeding experience in my aquariums and I'm just "fishing" for some advice...

I've got Lemon BN Plec fry and I've moved them into their own tank with a sponge filter. Some of the fry have left the cave but most are still in there after more than 24 hours since the first explorers left the cave... I'm wondering if I could tip out the fry left in the cave with Dad.

Any advice is always appreciated and suggestions are welcome!  *grin*

Thanks,

Dan

I know male BNs will take care of the eggs and fry, although i dont think they look after the fry once they leave the cave. I think once they get their confidence up a bit more they will venture out of their own accord. You might be able to tip them out, but BNs are stubborn buggers (at least SJP is!). You can try but i’d be careful and not too heavy handed, if they dont move with gentle encouragement i would just leave them and see if they come out on their own. There’s likely to be some food and safety being in the cave which is probably the biggest reason for not coming out  *grin*

Yes! Simon's doing a grand job of paternal care! I'd wager that he hasn't stopped fanning them since they were deposited there 😂

I've just lifted the cave up gently and slowly tipped it slightly but I think I'll have to wait until they come out of their own accord.

There must be around 15-20 that have come out so far 😊

Update on Lemon Plec babies... they've all exited thw cave and I've counted at least 50!

Seems I just needed to have a little patience (and yes, the Take That song just popped into my head).

I've. just had this experience- I had 2 BN plecos who I was pretty sure were female and didn't like each other very much. However today I've noticed tint baby plecos sucking the glass all over my tank!!!

I did not intend to breed them, and had no idea they would do it this readily. My tank is only 125l although I do have a big external filter that is handling the bio load fine at this stage. I am thinking there is no way I will be able to keep the number of plecos I am likely to end up with. What do people do with all the babies in. this situation?
