Hi everyone - my sister recently bought an aquarium which we set up yesterday. We plan to do a fishless cycle using fish food (as we haven't been able to buy any bottled ammonia). We started the cycle yesterday and tested the water so we could get an idea of what the pH/ harness of the water is. The ammonia and nitrites were, as expected at 0ppm but somehow the nitrates were at 10ppm. We tested it again and it came back the same so we used a different test kit and got the same result. Does anybody know why this might be? Do you think this could cause any problems?
The pH is 7.5

Thanks, Charlotte

Hi Charlotte, have you tested your tap water too? My tap water has 15ppm of nitrates in it as standard. It’s fine for the fish and plants as long as you’re doing regular water changes.

Try to get some “Kleen Off” it’s a form of ammonia and available from Amazon. It will significantly simplify the process for you. Best of luck with the new tank
    Tank 1: 125l planted
    Venezuelean Corys
    False Julii Corys
    Neon Tetra
    Celestial Pearl Danios
    Golden Lyretail Kilifish.

Tank 2: 55l Amazon bio type
    Apistogramma Agassizii
    Green Neon Rasboras
