3D backgrounds

Hi. I' thinking about getting a 3D background ( probably a Juwel STR 600) for my Vision 180 tank but am a bit worried about how long it would last constantly immersed in water and was wondering if I could paint it with a water based polyurathene varnish to protect the surface. Would appreciate any tips or suggestions, Thanks
