connecting multiple tanks. Good idea? if so how?

hi all,
I am considering adding three 800 litre aquariums to my fish room to serve as display tanks for angels and discus. Can anyone advise whether it would be a good idea to connect the tanks to create a much larger system of water. I envisage connecting the tanks with tank connectors through drilled holes. The last tank drains into the sump, and the sum pumps into the first tank. Herbie overflow into the sump, and level connectors between the tanks themselves. I thought i could put angels in one tank, discus in another etc. So they would be part of the same water volume but wouldn't "meet in person".
The reason I am thinking of this seemingly complicated arrangement, is to create a more stable system, and also it could work on a single sump. The reason I am not just doing one large aquarium is because it won't fit into the room in one go (the fish room is in the cellar and there are a few tight turns and a steep staircase to get down there).
Would this be better achieved with acrylic or glass, or would that not matter? Keen to hear views of those that may have done something like this.

You could connect the tanks with a length of pipe out of one and into the next, if you didn’t want the finality of drilling holes in the glass. You just need the ends of the pipes to be low enough so that air doesn’t get in when you do a water change. Basically a siphon from one tank to the next that’s permanently in place.
