250 gallon build very large
« on: February 22, 2012, 09:46:47 am »
i havent got a camara but im doing a tank log for my 250 gallon has been cycled for  2 weeks stable parameters only thing in the tank is a 2' deep sand bed.
1st question is are 2 external (need to check spelling on that) filters by ehiem sufficent?
2nd i want to hear what you would stock it with if you dont think my idea would work ?
3rd for my the stock i have in my head (read further for stock) should i provide alot of hiding places and alot of plants or just use a few plants and 2-3 hiding places?

any way my idea of stocking this is a predeter tank with a pair of african butterfly fish, 1 BGK, 1 fire eel, and 3 brislenose plecos for CUC  is that a sensible stocking please answer im not quite sure this my first tank over 75 gallon

1st question- it depends which Eheim models they are.

2nd and 3rd questions - I'll leave for someone with experience of keeping those fish to answer.

They filter approx. 1050L/h and your tank holds around 1100 litres? That'll only be 2 x filtration, which is probably not adequate. I'd be inclined to double that at least.

Not what I'd call a 'predator' tank. Have you done any research on those species?

african butterfly fish, quite small 6 inches tops! Probably wouldn't see then in a tank THAT BIG!!

BGK, yeah than can get big, in time, but are shy and reclusive, especially during the daytime.

Fire Eel, again can get big, in time. Will hide away in that lovely 2 inch sand bed, probably make a meal of the butterfly fish.

Bn's, smallish about 6 inches tops, also quite shy and hide away.

your proposed filtration for this stocking should be fine, but there's going to be allot of empty tank space. 1000+lts is a lot of water space to fill.

Lots of predator species to choose from. Central American, South American, Asian, African and Australian. I wouldn't mix them though, I'd stick to a region and do a biotype from that location.

For intance I live in Oz, so a predator tank down my way would look like this.

    Saratoga Jardinii
    Barramundi
    Sooty Grunter
    Silver Perch
    Jungle Perch
    Salmon Tail Catfish
    Bull Rout
    Snakehead
    Murray Cod
    Golden Perch
    Bass

You get the idea. As far as eels go I'd have to research what was what.

here's a link, I'll be honest, I've had little experience with Asian predators, the only ones I've kept for any length of time was the Freshwater Rays.

Nice size tank.. how long did it take to cycle fully?

    What are the physical dimensions?

    Where's the pics?

I'd be considering Clown Knife I think... over a BGK. If I were to put a knife fish in a small swimming pool, that is.
