Zeldas 55ltr tank log.
« on: April 22, 2012, 08:29:56 pm »
I haven't started the cycle yet-i'm waiting for my ammonia to come, however my tank/filter/decorations etc are all in the tank ready with the water for when it does.  I might need a bit of help with the cycling as never done it before, so posting here as you are all so knowledgeable  :)  can I add real plants half way through the cycle or should I do it before or after?

Thanks for those links.  I have the general gist of what to do, but I'm sure there will be a few blips on the way. :-)

Can put in the plants at anytime during the cycle.  The plants will love the ammonia :)

Oh no, I just thought, we're going away on may 7th for a week.  Will it make a difference if no ammonia is added for that week?  This holiday has caused nothing but trouble lol.

I currently have a tetratec 250 filter but was thinking about upgrading.  Can anyone suggest a good (but cheap) filter for a 55 litre?  Also thining about getting harlequin rasboras and neon tetras or guppies, any advise/warnings  on that?

    What do you consider cheap?

With regard to the guppies, if you decide on getting some get all males, unless you want to find yourself with a tank full of fry on a regular basis.

Neon tetras shouldn't be put in a newly set up tank, they need to wait 3 or 4 months despite what your lfs may tell you.

Well as cheap as possible, £20 ish (i know im dreaming there probably be much more than that)

I did not know that about tetras, that might be why my last lot died :(  Will the harlequins be ok in a new set up (once cycled)

They should be fine, harlequins are pretty hardy fish.

I just received this ammonia, could you take a look and see if its the right thing?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0041WCVXM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00  One of the reviews says its 9.5% ammonia, does that sound right?  I was assuming if it was pure ammonia it would be 100% ??

If you check on the Ammonia Calculator link, which is over here

    <----------------------

You'll see there is a place to enter the strength of your ammonia.

It was actually a different brand that had the 9.5%.  The bottle i have doesn't have the strength on it?  Should i just use 9.5% as a guide?
