Lurch's log
« on: November 26, 2012, 11:18:02 pm »
So tomorrow I'm off top pick up a 4' Juwel tank!!

It currently has a couple of 6" Angels, a 13" plec, kissing Gourami, some fish he can't remember the name of, and some "catfish". I shall be rehoming most of this lot as I am buying this to upgrade my 96l.

Once I've got it and shoehorned all the fish back in, I'll put up a couple of pics as it is. I will be having a full re-scape, the gravel will be going and sand will be going in. It has some wood, and I have more wood coming.

I am rubbish at aquascaping, so I would welcome any suggestions anyone has for helping set it up. I will be transferring my plants, but I think the focus will be more on the hardscape, and plant round it. The floorpan is 4'x16", so get thinking up folks!!! I'd like to create several areas or territories in there, but no real idea what to do...

Anyway, until tomorrow!!

Wahooooo, how many corys you going to have now? *applause* you going to use the other tank for breeding then, or do you already have a breeding set up? I cant remember.

Well, it's double the floorpan of the old one *grin*

Sadly, it's an upgrade, one in, one out, with an overlap for me to set it up. However, the 96l is bolted to the wall, so I could take the proverbial a bit :)

Wonder how much I can get for my old tank if I keep it cycled and with substrate, bit of decor, and maybe a handful of fish as an option. Should pay for some more Cory!!

So the tank is here! Needs a damn good clean and many small water changes. Light not working, but bagged a T5 to see my through. Gonna try a new T8 tube, see what gives. Bagged some other compact fluorescentt bulbs, 2D style, but long, got a 4pin fitting on one end. No idea what they are, but I'll try and locate a fitting for them.

Had a productive day of collecting stuff, go in to more detail later, but here's my stocking list that I've inherited.

1 common? plec, 1 SAE/flying fox, 2 angels, 2 kissing Gourami, 3 neons, 2 glowlights, 2 scissor tails, 2 peppered cory, 1 clown loach (juvi), 1 platy, 1 black widow

Mrs L wants to keep the Angels. Just hope they like it cool. She's been on an Angel forum, and apparently they'll be fine ar 23/24. I'd have said 26 minimum, ideally 28odd. The SAE, platy and Gourami will be going. Not sure about what I'll do with the rest. Anyone interested, drop me a DM. The plec has to go, he's over a foot long, and looks ridiculous even in a 4' tank. Very keen to see him gone.

I'll do a pic tomorrow, see if the yellow/green tinge has gone (think API 0.25ppm ammonia shade), I'll post a pic whatever, and hopefully will be able to see enough.

Couple of pics. One minging tank, and a plec in a box. For scale, the box is 30l, and is 14"x11.5" at the base. Rena external too. Bit noisy. May top it up with water tomorrow, see if I can't get more air out. Either that or I'll flog it and get another APS1400.

He is, isn't he?! I say he, I've no idea other than "it" looks massive in the 4'. Not sure my Cory would like that when I've swapped it all over. Want him? Swap for your BWs? :)

Upon consultation with folk who know better than me, it seems Mrs Lurch can keep the Angels!

    Thanks Martin!

Oh yes, other goodies I have acquired today. Assorted fish food an medicine. Don't like the idea of these second hand, so binned them. The flake was Wilko's own as well. I also got a DIY CO2 kit, pop bottle via a safety chamber and a CO2 ladder. Got a spirally thing, but apparently no good with low pressure systems. I now have 2 JBL full kit briefcases, rake loads of wood, small and very boig gravel cleaners, hand operated siphon tubes, assorted Tetra test kits, big roll of filter wadding, water drums with no lids, bit of a 3D backround, 2 bottles of Prime, 2 mostly used bottles of aquasafe, couple of algae magnet scrapers and some other stuff I haven't figured out yet. May pop a thread for identification, and then eBay it. I'll offer first dibs here of course...

    Tank and filtration info.

Juwel Rio 240, filter Rena Filstar XP4, rated at 1700lph. No idea what the real world figure is. I'd say 1300-1400 at a guess. The APS1400 will be going in as well.

Debating whether to have a bar at each end, APS blowing upwards, and the Rena down, both from the side in this instance, or go for both across the back, aimed slightly up and forwards then forcing the water down the front and back across the substrate. Or just both from the side blowing down, and an airstone at night...

    Much food for thought.

Heh! Nope! Would have weighed 1/4 ton! Drained it in to drums and scooped the gravel in to bags and kept it wet. Tiny bit of water left that I couldn't siphon out, about an inch's worth.

Big thanks to Freddie at MA who let me scrounge some bags for the fish!
