Concerned that both ammonia and nitrates have risen so quickly.
Should I do a water change?

How very odd. Water change, you don't want to see those levels above 0.25

Your 'how very odd' comment struck a chord somewhere Lurch.

There should be nowhere as much ammonia produced by the number of fish and shrimps that I have introduced (according to Aquadvisor, as I have allowed space for a few more fish at a later date), as my initial readings indicate.

I have cleaned (in tank water removed from tank) and dried the test tubes and syringe I use for extracting water for testing and re-tested twice. Both sets of results have come out as:
    Ammonia 0ppm
    Nitrites 0ppm

    Feel a lot better now!

Though obviously a small amount of ammonia is not good for the fish at all, the shrimps will not tolerate even that from what I have read.

Lesson learned - make sure testing equipment is not contaminated!!

Hell of a nitrite contamination though. The ammonia, while unlikely wasn't beyond the realms, but the nitrite was very baffling!!

    Glad you sussed it.

First week, every other day, after the first water change, 24h later, next week, 2-3 times, then chill :)
