Cherry Shrimp Woes

I have finally given up on keeping Cherry Shrimp. I lost 3 which I bought from my LFS for a whopping £12! These went MIA and never returned.

Convinced by the Missus that I had 'hoovered' them up during a routine water change, I sourced a load from a very nice man on here.

The quality of the shrimp sold to me was second to none. Truly stunning examples.

But it turned out my Neons and Guppies had a liking for Shrimp. After witnessing the demise of three of them, I had no alternative to move the remaining shrimp to my Betta Tank. I knew this was a risk with mixed finding on the Internet of people with massive success and those with terrible experiences.

Well today I can confirm I am one with tragic experiences. My Betta, Bertie the B*stard, has decimated my 13 shrimp in a matter of days.

I am now in a battle to correct the high ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels in my 17L tank. Since last night I am on my 3rd water change, but things are looking much more positive now. Thank god I invested in a proper test kit!

I love shrimp and really fell in love with them, but don't think I could risk any more in my setups.

Sorry for the loses gaz, always a risk with bettas and once any fish get a taste, they tend to hunt them down.

Sorry you lost them, that's the thing with Bettas, some are ok with shrimp some aren't.
Btw Chris I think my original ones were from you, still breeding well with great colour

Why not try a bigger shrimp like the Amanos? Sprightly little things. Less shy than the cherries.

I think the problem is the tanks just kill them. The Betta loves the taste it seems. The neons and guppies killed a few too. I don't think any shrimp would survive at this rate.

They are definitely being attacked and not dying then being eaten? How do you add your shrimp to your tank?

I have some of your fish and never noticed an issue.

If the shrimp are in the tank before the Betta is added I think they stand more of a chance, if the Betta is already in when you add the shrimp he just thinks he's being fed

Yes they are added last. Also, the shrimp were definitely healthy in both tanks.

It does depend on the Betta, one of mine won't tolerate any tank mates, the other lives quite happily with shrimp

I am setting up the 120l at the moment, but have another tank outside with an under gravel filter.
May have to convince the wife to let me set that up too ha ha

I found shrimp!

My plants were dying off, and as I am a bit tight I let them crumble taking floating pieces out. Glad I did too as I found one large shrimp.

2 days later there was a little shrimp.

The next day, another shrimp!

Turns out 3 shrimp are in the tank. A large one, medium one and a small one.

Needless to say new plants are now in. Made up that I still have some

I have a betta in a nano tank. The shrimp were there first, i put him in and immediately he attacked them. So moved them to the main tank, where they live with guppies and are thriving. Anyway i thought I would try Amanos as they are bigger. Same thing happened, so now they are in the main tank as well. Wouldn't mind but the nano was meant to be shrimp only til I feel in love with this betta.

Just got some pods for hidey holes now see if the shrimp like them
