What pleco's should I stock ?
« on: June 20, 2013, 12:49:07 am »
I have a 100L tank, in the middle of doing a fishless cycle at the moment, but when It's ready, I want to stock some pleco's, as they are some of my favorite fish.

I am definitely getting a bristlenose pleco as I like these and are easily available everywhere! But!? What other plecos could I stock with a BN in a 100L tank, that will get on with the BN and wont grow into a monster ?

I would like 2 BN plecos but I don't think my tank is big enough for them both :/

You could have two BNs, but they would have to be male and female.
I used to keep a panaque maccus with a BN, Two bits of wood and a cave for the BN.
Sent from my PC as I still don't understand the the logic for mobile internet usage ;) *grin*

Oh brilliant, I didn't think my tank would be suitable for two.

I was just looking at panaque maccus a minute ago, I was thinking of getting one of these to go with the BN. Will it matter if they are both males ? will they fight if they are ? And will one piece of wood be enough for the two or must they have their own ? The only 'cave' I have is a hollow skull, which i hope will do for the BN.

I had a male BN and a male panaque. They were fine, they sorted out their own territories and everything was hunky-dory. :)

I do like the look of these, only problem is that I am limited to the fish available in my area, their is a new Watermarque that should be open next month, and it looks pretty big, so I am hoping they will offer a much wider selection of fish. Although the current Watermarque do offer a fair size selection of fish, I would never buy anything from that particular store because half the fish are dead, the people that work their don't have a clue, and the roof is leaking like crazy.. overall a bad place!

Zebra pleco are really beautiful plecs and they only grow to 2.5 inches. The only down side is that they are very expensive. They can cost £100 or more. I dream of having one someday

They are really beautiful pleco's, but again I have not seen these stocked near me, and to be honest, I'm really new to this, so I wouldn't want to buy a £100 fish until I knew more. However, when i do stock, it will probably cost me around £60 ish depending if i ever make up my mind on what to stock, tougher decision ever is choosing fish!!

I've only ever seen them stocked at maidenhead aquatics in wheatley. They specialise in tropicals. Yeah I see your point. I've only been doing it for about a year and still learning new things everyday

I now go to Maidenhead Aquatics in Taunton, which mostly specialise in tropicals, but also do marine. And the pleco's they currently have in stock are:

    Bristlenose @ £10 each
    L201 inspectors @ £40 each
    L333 @ £40 each
    L411 @ £35 each
    L340 @ £30 each
    &
    L190 Royal panaques @ £50 each

I have asked them if they will be getting more in but still waiting for a response, guess I should really ring them than messaging them on facebook all the time :S haha

Oooooh I will definitely have to find that out, cheers. It will be a couple weeks before I can stock anything anyway, so I will find out when they get new stock in and keep popping in. Any exscuse to go into a fishy shop and just stare and browse for 45 minutes.

Yeah I normally go once a month. I used to go every week and always couldn't resist buying something so only go once a month now so I don't spend to much money. What size tank do you have?

    Many thanks

Just realised that in your first post it says what tank you have. My bad. Give it a couple of months and you'll want to upgrade. I've had 3 tanks in a year. Your always happy when you get a new tank and then a couple of months later want a bigger one lol

Are you based in Taunton then? Maidenhead aquatics at black down nurseries near Wellington is the best shop around. They had whiptails when I went in Tuesday, a couple of different ones. I wouldn't touch any watermarque with a barge pole. Awful place.
