What can I feed my otos?
« on: July 02, 2013, 12:33:10 pm »
I'm worried that my otos aren't getting food.
I've tried feeding pellets at lights out but all the other fish just thinks it's round 2 of dinner and gobble them up. So i tried the pellets at the same time as feeding the other fish their food and they eat them too!
I've put in courgette and it is immediately covered in the snails. Now i'm out of ideas!

Anyone know of anything that my otos will enjoy but the others won't?

    Algae!!

If their bellies are round & full (seen when they stick to the glass), I wouldn't worry too much, though it may not look like it, they will be getting some.

You could try larger algae wafers.
They'll be able to get to the courgette.
Try cultivating aglae - place a smooth stone in water on the window sill in full sun - after a few days it will go green with algae - place stoner in tank for them.

    Thanks for that Chris.

I was told that otos should not just live on algae though...maybe I'll try a bigger wafer...

Persevere with the courgette, always put it in the same place & they'll soon realise it's food & shove the snails out of the way.
I blanche mine for a few minutes so it's slightly soft, you could also try broccoli stalks

Could you not get one of the clips and put on side of tank I know snails will still get it but maybe less likely to if on the side of tank?  I just got my otos and have been growing some algae on stones in water but I put a bit of courgette in and I seen a few go for it although was a lot left.

I put the odd algae wafer in as well but I dont have much in that tank or snails really so they arent a problem.
