Just thought that I would share this. http://www.bigfishcampaign.org

I've been on a shop tour today and found 3 of the 7 stores within 45 minutes of me stocking Red Tailed Catfish. Also found some Pangasius Sharks, and shovel noses. Too big to be kept in home aquaria. Hopefully something will change to stop such big fish being sold soon.

They also have a Facebook page should anybody be interested.

I follow them on Facebook, their mascot Buster has been visiting schools & public aquaria spreading the message about tank busting fish

Nice One,

When I was looking to upgrade I really wanted an arrowana but after looking into it I knew even my 8 footer wold not be big enough.

I know one of my local LFS which often has a RTC but I suspect that was a tank-buster they took off someone. Another sells Shovels regularly but not the Tiger Shovel and when I bought mine they chatted to me for a while about it making sure my tank was suitable.

I've got a synodontis catfish (upto 25cm) apparently and a red tail shark (up to 18cm) in my 120litre tank. Before you have a go at me, they were in the tank when I bought it and I've had them about a week, I've been doing some research and have realised they are too big and it wouldn't be fair to put other fish in with them. How can I safely re home then with the certainty that they will be cared for?

You could see if your LFS is willing to take them off your hands or see if someone here has the space.

On another note - I saw a RTC in one LFS on Friday which was pretty much the length of the tank it was in. Even my sister who knows nothing about fish was appalled.

I'll see if the LFC would do a trade for some more adequate fish for my tank! You don't get if you don't ask!

I'd put an advert on here, and also aquarists classifieds as that way you can guarantee they are going to a suitably sized home.

I just said good bye to my bala shark through aquarist classified wasnt asked a single question when i bought it along with a knife fish and an albino frog when i first started out, theyre all in bigger homes now thankfully

Most aquatic shops operate as a business unfortunately and don't really care what happens after the sale.

I certainly don't agree with banning the sale of large fish.
Lots of people, me included, have large tanks at home.
I also know of a hotel in Torquay that has a 20ft indoor pond in the conservatory, and the whole room is done out Amazon style, it's amazing actually.

But I do agree retailers should be much more responsible in what they sell, and who they sell it to.

So easy to get some of the big species though. I could go out today and probably find red tailed cats in 3 places. I definately think that there should be a licensing system, which would stop the lay fishkeeper keeping them but not the big fish fanatics. My first message in this thread isnt written particularly well. I dont think all big fish should be banned, except for red tailed cats maybe. They should be left in the wild IMO.
