I am one who loves to keep these as called `tank busters` there are so many shops that sell Aro`s good if you have a 8x3x2 tank fro a silver that can grow to 36 inch in a tank at its best. FW Sting rays, now they need a bigger foot print tank, of at least ? x 4 foot dependant on the type.
BUT
How many fish are sold that grow to a smaller size but still grow to maybe 12 inch and are sold in every shop there is, there fore more should be dome about this than the few of the cats, rays, aro`s that are sold.
I was sold a yellow fin catfish years ago, i was told it would grow to 12 inch, it was 2 inch when i got him, it grew to be a RTCxTSN which can grow to over 36 inch, i had to give him away to a bloke with a pond after i had him for 6 months in a 8x2x2 tank, and that pushed it.
All for the idea but there are more fish being harmed from gold fish to Oscars than the tank busters IMO.

Ten from Len there waynes world. It's like any animal not just fish. They shouldnt sell them to incompetent people with a small tank. They should have a good knowledge of how big they get and tank size. I don't really agree with photo's of others tanks as that would be scrutinizing how you should change this and that however they would know if they had a big enough tank when asking questions without seeing photo's. People just think what the hell. What i hate even more is not the buyer it's the seller as it's their job to make sure they know they will get looked after but people just see ££££££

I agree with Wayne. When I first started buying fish I was shocked at how little information some shops display and in some cases were information was just wrong. I was sold "Dwarf plecs" which I was assured would be no more than 5 inches long. Turned out they were Sailfin plecs I kept them for as long as they were a comfortable size for my tanks (around a year) . I was gutted when I gave them to another LFS (they are quite characterful fish) and not sure they believed me about the miselling. Thankfully the shop who sold me them has closed down.

I would be happy to put hand on hart and say there is more fish bought and sold that come to harm that are sold in every fish shop around that are basic fish we see every day, Oscars, Silver Sharks, Clown loach, so many of the small catfish and Plecs etc etc a lot of fish grow over 4 inch which so many folk buy and are sold, the majority of fish for sale get this big in captivity and just no good for the general size tanks folk have.
All for protecting the tank buster fish but more should be done and said for the others which are lot smaller but still get to 4-8 inch long plus and still not going to a home where they can be cared for.
Its a 50/50 LFS and customer awarness.

I can see this is an old thread, but unfortunately it's still a current problem. I really don't understand why some lfs keep a big stock of larger fish that just won't be suitable for the average home aquarium.
As I mentioned in my other post I was sent off home with 2 sailfins (1 died on the way home) for my 125lt tank. I have got him & my other fish a much bigger home now, but it was upsetting to see so many big sailfins that had been returned to the shop because they had quite simply sold loads of them to people who shouldn't have had them in the first place.
This experience taught me a lot very early on, I probably still have a community of fish that wouldn't necessarily be recommended, but touch wood its working. It never entered my head that I wouldn't be given good advice and steered in the right direction by my lfs. TBH it ruined my experience early on with my aquarium, instead of enjoying it, I was constantly monitoring my water , doing extra water changes & saving to upgrade to a larger tank as soon as possible.
I agree with previous comments, fish of this sort of size should have to be ordered in,not sent off with unwitting customers. Mine were really small when I got them & being completely ignorant I couldn't even imagine the size he is capable of growing.
Also when they got loads of them back, there was one huge plec that had been put in a tank with a lovely flat white fish & it was sucking off the side of the poor thing, just disgusting.
