I'll start us off. This might give new fish keepers a few ideas of how they'd like to design their tanks so the more of us that post pics the better...plus I'm nosy and want to see what everyone else has done with their tanks :)

Tank 1 = juwel trigon 190 community tank
Tank 2 = Convict tank (complete with fry and eggs arghh)
Tank 3 = work in progress soon be a species tank currently housing the firemouths and my pardalis catfish and the kissing fish
Tank 4 = Guppy tank
sunny maybe one day in years to come ill have a tank that looks as awesome as yours !!

I've had quite a few tanks over the years, I'm having trouble finding a few I've 'Decommissioned', but I'll keep looking *grin* I've still kept my favourites though, and they are ever evolving. *grin*

Every tank here has it's own uniqueness. They are all so gorgeous and you can tell that the passion of fish keeping is present in each and every one! Good work everyone! Let's keep the pics coming...I will post mine soon...very soon.

Next is a friend's tank I helped set up and get established late in 2009. He had all this expensive eqiupment, spared no expense, but couldn't get the plants to grow, so we tore it down and rescaped it, using plants from my tanks, this tank 'Grew in' in only 8 weeks. He was totally 'Chuffed' with the result.

Stunning! I love the harlequins against the greenery, just shows you don't need loads of different fish, sometimes it's better to stick to one type of shoaling fish :)

Harlequin rasbora! WOW! Just how many?! What does he do at head-count time? I count daily and had to split up 12 to 2 tanks of 6. Just couldn't handle trying to keep track of so many in one tank! Obsessive? Can't abide the idea of 'losing' any and not realising! All these tanks look great. Good idea, Dee to get evryone posting full tank pics. I'll have a 'go' after next wc/algae scrape/window cleaning!

Basically the Glass out take allows a more gentle flow. If you push a high volume of water out through small holes on a spray bar you plants tend to get blown around, where as a large diameter out take with the same water volume, creates a softer flow, still the same turnover, but with less pressure.

A few more shots of my 'Keeper Tanks'. I call these my 'Test Bed Trio' I mainly use them for trying out different scapes, plants and experiment with different ferts and C02 injection levels, as well as certain fish and inverts. They come in real handy, and are very easy to look after and changing things around, takes very little time or effort.

I also collect heaps of different mosses, from all over the place. Some I find myself, some I swap and some I purchase from other hobbyists. Usually I only get very small amounts, say a thimble full, so I need a small tank to help grow them on and to see if they will thrive under water, allot of my mosses usually start out life on land. it just happens that some do very well underwater as well.

Truly stunning *shock* - I actually prefer the moss tank as it was, but still brilliant.
Anyway, here's mine - I've currently let it "moss out" & not trimmed to give my berried CRS as much chance as pos should anything hatch, so it looks a bit messy at the mo.
I'll soon be getting a tank just for CRS, which I plan to fill with different mosses - are you propagating mosses with a view to sell? ;)

Not done hardly anything to ours apart from trim the plants once a week to keep it 'tidy' and add 'Nutrafin plant gro' every 2 weeks when I do my water changes.

Sunny dee , do you use any special lighting , your tank looks very tranquil. Mine seems very bright all the time , I would like the lighting to be a bit more subtle. :)

Some amazing tanks there. Dee's tank is something to behold even without any Co2. +Co2 = plants on steds? Mick's mossiness is amazing! *frantic* Johnny and Jo's Betta tank is wicked.
No Ann, no special lighting. Its just the way it came out on that pic... depends on time of day how it looks. Weird I know :)
Atar, pls post a pic. You might not think its anything special but not everyone wants a tank thats full of plants. I'd still enjoy seeing yours. :)

Hi Guys, this is my tank- picture is from my mobile so it really don't do it justice. Let me know what you think? I know skulls and things like are frowned apon but it really does make an awesome cave for my RTB (looks great when he's sulking about in it!) and the bogwood makes a good cave for my pleco which loves to hang upside down underneath it!

Still a very young tank (3 months ish). Loads to do with it. Just leeching up inspiration and ideas from this forum. Heres an updated pic of my main, still not finished yet, going to get pygmy chain sword to carpet half the front and get a load of flame moss or fissidens for bogwood, current plants are really starting to grow now :D

Thanks for all the brilliant pictures of the full tanks...They are amazing....I do love the one with all the harlequin rasboras and the one with the Discus...I have never seen discus for sale in any of the shops that i go to around here. I like another tank too don't know who did it now...With the sand in the centre and the bits of slate around it.
Can a person put any kind of wood in the tank or any big piece of slate or stone? People seem to have alot of variety...Even i saw a little pot like a brown ceramic pot?
Here i will add my two tanks before i replant the big one....60L and 240L

Nope, the bots will have been clay plant pots, they're used quite often for breeding cave dwelling dwarf cichlids.
Slate is inert so you can put as much of it in your tank as you like.
Some woods will leach nasty chemicals into the tank, same with stones, best to check up here if you aren't too sure about something new.

My lfs is either Obi (surprisingly good quality) or this LFS (http://www.aquarium-tonndorf.de/) its about 30 minutes by car from me, but its the best one in Hamburg (IMHO).

They are lovely....What is the shell dweller set up? Is there snails in that or just empty shells? Looks lovely...and what are the rocks at the back?
It's a cichlid sand substrate with about 30 odd cleaned empty escargot shells (meant for cooking with)...the rocks at the back are just slate 'discs' (I went for a mixture of flat and fat) from my local garden centre at just 0.79p each. The fish are busy spitting sand eveywhere at the moment as they re-arrange the decor. :)

I needed an up-to-date piccie of my chocolate gourami tank to put on my work PC, so I grabbed the camera and went to it. However I didn't pause to check the settings of its myriad knobs and screws and toggles, and it produced this rather nice (to me!) surprise:

A combination of the back of the tank being mirrored, the settings of the camera and the flash produced this 'moonlight-through-trees' effect!

They are lovely adam i see you got lights working again....Didn't you say a few weeks ago that you had no lights working for a few weeks and the fish were breeding? Maybe that is a bigger tank you have also is it? How many do you have? :)

Don't think the lights were too much of an issue - might've been the trigger, but now they're at it on a regular basis. Just the one tank, the second 'tank' is actually a tub - only 35 litres.

I thought I'd pop a couple of pics of my tank on here! It's an Aquatlantis 180L, stocked as a community tank, with mostly guppies, tetras (neons, glowlights and black neons), and corys. We've just rehomed 11 fish, so (I think) the tank looks a bit bare, but we're planning our next fishy purchases as we speak.......

Sure looks impressive.,
guess some people like SunnyDee, yourself,others, have the natural ability to get tanks looking good.
Making me want to scape my 180 tank. dont seem to be enough hrs in day tho.
Shame the competition doesnt look like it going to happen, *cry* shame, doesnt need prizes does it ?, just a competition so we can enter our tanks, always great to see other peoples tanks, can give us guys ideas on layout etc. appropriate feedback from others is always good.

Competitions are great and all that, but I agree with you that it's just nice to see other people's tanks and get fellow fishkeepers' opinions on what you've created....I know I love looking at pics, so I'm sure lots of other people like looking at them as well.

Yes we don't need prizes, and if they want to do prizes a little few free plants or something would do very nicely. We just love looking at the tanks and the rescapes of the tanks and trying to make ours look a little better all the time.

Moss only grows in that tank, as do crypts. I've lost all the hygro, which was doing brilliantly for about a two years. Java fern does better in the Trigon, but then it's so good that with the Sword you can't see the tank! If only my back was ok to do some gardening..... *rolleyes*

Righto, here's my effort to date. Had the tank running smoothly for about 4 months now, and after lots of tinkering and trying various plants, I have finally got it to just about how I want it. Although looking through the pics on this thread has meant that the tinkering will probably not stop!! I do like the look of the mosses.

SunnyDee just looking into plants at the minute, I'm like two you have in your tank.
In the middle at the front the wide, low one and the one further over to the right big neat leaves? Hope that helps with the description.
Also like the one in the middle of Teejays tank the greener one with big neat leaves!
Would I get away without CO2 and specific lights e.t.c?

The 'H' one is correct *giggle* But the anubia one is coming up with different pics, mindu, I like that one too. The one in your tank is the one at the front in the middle, very full at the bottom with floaty bits, shaped like a water lily! If that make any sense at all! *giggle*

And last one of the full tank...... it might not look much but the plants on the end have grown from about 1.5 inch long to about 7 or 8 inches. The pennywort i had some and Lee posted me more when he cut down his tank. The moss balls i bought on ebay and they were very small....They have grown a nice bit too.
I have not bought any new fish in months and months, so they same ones are happy in there too.

They're not actually blue, must be the light reflection or the black part of their bodies slightly tinted. They're Harlequin Rasboras ;)

The blue fish ruthie, depends on which photo you are looking at. In one photo of the top of the tank the zebra danio's look blue. Adam says the harlequins look blue in another. In one picture of the tank there are actually blue fish, if you mean the little neons tetra's???

Hi everyone! I'm fairly new here & haven't posted much other than on newbies so far (thanks for all the help btw!) but I've loved having a good nosey at all your tanks *grin* so thought I ought to post my effort! Tho its a little shameful in comparison to some of the beautiful tanks you lot have..mines a work in progress! ;) Excuse the state of the 2 pots in there! I think they're beyond cleaning now so I've ordered a couple of small pieces of mopani bogwood to replace them once they've had a soak. Now to hope I've actually managed to attach a photo!!

thanks, i have hacked around 50% of it off last week as i had not seen the ottos for months and i was only seeing half of the other fish too. i have 2 very small black neons that im sure are new as i bought all 12 of them at the same time 2 years ago and i have counted all ottos :)

Thanks arctic but I found that out the first night we had him and he climbed up the filter to have a rest *eek* I always keep a grass there now so he can get up easily. Fingers crossed no attacks on fish or escapes in 6 months. My bogwood is slowly disappearing though *roflmao*

Lot's of stuff! When i started out i thought i'd like a mixed bunch of evrything in there as something would be going on all the time. Took me a while to realise most of my fish shouldn't be together, should be in bigger groups and some will outgrow my tank. I'm probably overstocked too but as soon as i find a house i like and get out of my tiny flat i'll be purchasing a bigger tank to go with this one! *good_luck*
In saying that though i don't have any problems with fighting, fin nipping or illness with this lot -

Hi,
Thought i would try and add a couple of pics.
My tank is about 14 months old, i started out with silk plants and have had a mixture of fish and plants but think i am getting to how i want it to be.
I only added most of my plants in the last few weeks so i am hoping they root and grow.

thanks. i know the big plant down the middle of the background looks a bit fake but its a temporary fix as i had to cut the backgound in half to get it past the braces at the top and there i an obvious line where the two parts meet!

Hi everyone.
Just an updated picture of my tank. The plants have grown mad. I have some algae mind you, green long thing onto some of the plants. Wrapped in around the pennyworth now going onto other plants. Looked ok at the start, but now it is growing a bit too much i'd say. Anyway here is the photo of my tank as it is today..... I have the before and after picture on the a.o.t.m. for May.

Removing some of the floating plants let enough light in to be able to have a go at a piccie-update of my Chocky tank. Fans of Vale!TMBlur will be pleased to note that I haven't lost my deftness of touch on the defocus button ...
I've since changed the top to the thicker 1 1/2" wood as the thinner stuff warped a bit. Its all wall mounted as the floors aren't flat or level so a conventional stand didn't work too well.
Still got to add doors and a few coats of varnish as well.

Looks a bit higgeldy piggeldy as there is some stuff in there from my old 2 foot tank. This is my 3 foot. But most of it is in there in storage in a way before it goes into my 4ft when it is up and running.
Still, it looks kinda ok and I love the tea colour from the wood :)

Nice and colourful - I'm sure the fish will like it. Question: what is the green "root-like thing" on the right-hand side? Also: make sure that the big brown flat stone on the left can't slip down and squash any fish! *eek* (A bit of aquarium silicone will do the trick nicely).

I would start a new thread and ask about the fishless cycle thingy, make sure you are doing it right so as not to waste any time :) (I don't know about it) and best place to get the silicone for fish friendly use :), awesome set up for 1st tank too wtg you :) *yahoo* *good_luck*

At the minute the plants are all fake but it is the next thing we are going to change, there is a good 2" of sand in the bottom of the tank which then has another 2" of gravel around the main boarder do you think this will be good enough for plants to root in ?

Hi all,
A few shots of my Roma 240 work in progress. I've been slowly adding to the planting & my Golden Gourami has been biting bits off slightly quicker! My Elodea Densa is growing like wildfire & I keep thinking about pruning, but am quite liking the slightly 'wild' look. What does everyone think? To prune or not to prune??

It sounds like it should be a real word! Might do a bit of pruning during my PWC tomorrow. I will replant my prunings! There it's now in common use, so Oxford dictionary will be knocking on your door soon to add it to their next edition :)

Want to do some pruning of the more battered-looking leaves, too, but I think I will wait till we do our first water change before I get too heavily involved in that - I know it's about elbow-deep on me just now from trapping the cucumber under a pebble for the bottom feeders tonight!

Most plants for the trade are grown out of the water anyway so that wont be a problem. Stick a stainless steel fork/spoon through that cucumber and drop it in! No wet hands that way *grin*

Some fertiliser seems to have perked up the existing plants, but they aren't so lovely-looking as some I have seen. I will have to read up on that, I think, and buy some of the famous Johnny's ferts.

yeah I love that to, I've just started treating it for green slime, so i got rid of loads of plants and sand that were smotherd so there was as little in there as possible. and just gave the plants at the back a good trim and stuff, but it is looking rather bare :(. fingers crossed it will stay away! n thank you :) its my first big tank and ive only been fishkeeping for just over a year and a half so im not to sure what the definition of a good tank looks like lol x x

This is my African river tank. I used cobbles instead of gravel/sand to give it a more river like appearance. There is a powerful spray bar located just above the water at one end to give the impression of good water movement again to enhance the river look. A 3D background completes the look. The tank has been set up for 4 years now and all the fish in there spawn on a regular basis.

If you can get them to accept each other im sure they will. I made the mistake when i bought my first pair in buying a smaller/younger male than the female and she never accepted him, she always have lovely colours but he never did.
The pair i have now have mated and they are both glowing!

Ah well the male is about half an inch larger I'd guess, the colours have come on well so far since I got them last week. They were pretty bland in the lfs so pleased with progress.

I wasn't sure if I had or not lol, *dontknow* so many tanks, fish and messages. Oh well if I did I can't find it and at least it is in it's proper place this time
I did think the pebbles might be a problem so I introduced some upside down catfish which really get in among the cobbles and can sense a scrap of food from 3ft away lol. There haven't been any issues with the tank at all.

This is my African river tank. I used cobbles instead of gravel/sand to give it a more river like appearance. There is a powerful spray bar located just above the water at one end to give the impression of good water movement again to enhance the river look. A 3D background completes the look. The tank has been set up for 4 years now and all the fish in there spawn on a regular basis.

Thanks Jackie, it's been up and running for about 2-3months, so still got plenty of growing to do. It's a160 litres. I now want a much, much, much bigger one :) . I call the shelves my hanging baskets. I originally wanted three inclining on the back wall, my tile cutter had other ideas, hence the slightly out of shape finishing touches. Wanted to have some heavy leaved plants in them to give the look like hanging baskets, but haven't found any plants suitable. :(

I think it's all mangrove root - I'm not 100% sure, though. The bit in the middle is, definitely. The other two pieces I couldn't say for certain. One is a piece Himself has had for years, the other big bit on the left hand side is a fairly new addition.
Anyway, I unpacked the big digital camera (as opposed to my wee point and shoot) and took some slightly better photos....

Here is my current 200l setup, wasn't a fan of blood parrots but my wife loves them so we have 3. The good news is that they and the Sevrum's will outgrow the tank very quickly so I had an excuse to order a new 425 litre...
The tank has been running about 7 years and the kissing gourami in there must have been there for most of that time.

The blue and yellow fish is a Bosemani Rainbow - had a shoal of 6 for many years, look great, get to a good size without being silly, around 4 inches or so and shoal nicely in the mid water.

Yes, thats absolutely right.
For some time now I have been dosing more than the advised amount. It comes with a measuring cap and all I do is simply half fill it, I think it's maybe a double dose.
Although I bought some ferts, (Profito, from Johnny on this board), I dont actually use it as it colours the water for a while but more importantly I dont think I need it because my nitrates are maintained at 0ppm which I'm sure is because the plants a feeding on it.
You wouldn't believe how much more some of the plants have grown since that photo was taken!

Some really nice tanks in this thread given me some ideas to think about, also nice that 'rules' that I had read elsewhere like 'one main object just off centre' don't need to be followed religiously to have a great looking tank. Must admit I think I'd only go as far as moderately planting when I get that far but I can appreciate the work that has gone into the 'greener' tanks to make them look that good as I bet it could easily descend into chaos.

Fish are loving all the plants. Hopefully they will help keep the algae down too.

Good, EasyCarbo works for me and with all the plants I havent a trace of algae anywhere, I think a reasonable head of snails helps too, they are not eating the plants but they do eat the mulch and any food left over. The other thing is the plants are keeping my nitrates at 0ppm - bonus!

With the Snails, is there a particular type you have? I think I will definitely invest in some snails as I do get a little bit a mulch which I would like to eradicate.

Bladder snails don't eat loading algae. If you want an algae snail then you want a nerite snail :-)

Yep, definately. It's not an aquatic plant although it does like to grow in the margins of a pond but never submersed. It will show signs of going brown and then die and as mentioned by 'jackiemcg34' it will cause problems with your water.

First of all thank you for compliment in my tank. I've had that plant for around 4 or 5 weeks I guess. I have my water checked every week at lfs and all ok up to now. They live better out of water??

Oh yes, they do it all the time.
There have been many incidents on here and some people have taken them back to the LFS where they have been refunded or exchanged.
Someone on a very recent thread was told by the dealer when it was taken back, ''its like buying a bunch of flowers'', in other words will look good and brighten the tank up, but it wont last. Sorry, you need to take it out.
You could try complaing at your LFS or simply plant it in a pot on the windowsill or even better if you have a pond, plant it in the border.

If you are trying to develop a planted tank there are several threads on here full of information.
But the basics are a good substrate, I use 'Tetra Complete' under a layer of fine gravel for the rear two thirds of the tank and sand in the front third. Reasonable lighting but this isn't the most important factor and finally Co2 - although I don't actually use Co2 myself - I double dose daily with EasyCarbo instead.

I love my outdoor ponds as much as my indoor tank but obviously for different reasons but it's surprising the amount of crossover there is though. Here's a couple of pics of my ponds.

Thank you! Yes there is a net which goes over it (you can just about see it in the picture on the previous page) but at the time of me filming I had taken it off as I was doing work on the pond. As soon as I had finished then the net goes back on.

Here's my (finally) finished tank. Though it may need more plants soon ;) I'm really happy with it, never thought i'd ever own a tank like it but thanks to all the wonderful people on here i do!

Same as what i got at the front of my tank in this pic. Leaves at the bottom are purple/red the new growth is green, not very tall plant but also cannot remember the name *blink*
Mine is pretty basic, would love to do a full on Aquascape at some point though. Here is pic of my 3 and half foot Clearseal running Tetratec ex 600 canister filter,Eheim heater and air stone,sort of redwood/bogwood,lava type rock and slate,plants are java ferns,amazon swords and grasses,not sure on the name of the 2 red ones but look nice,substrate is sand looking aqua grit,only neons in tank at mo but looking to do community tank.

They're actually just a resin material, you can get them from MA and they're really lovely looking when in the tank, an the fish love them.

I actually had one of these in my new tank, a bit like the one you have on the left but as it was completely hidden anyway by plants I took it out when I did the weekly water change yesterday.
Even though it has hole at the top like a chimney and an opening at the bottom plus another hole half way up, I was absolutely gobsmacked at the terrible smell that came out of the tank along with loads of evil smelling bubbles! Clearly the water wasn't circulating through it and it was stagnating - terrible sulphur / sewerage type smell. Fortunately it only lasted for about a minute and the bubbles that followed stopped a couple of minutes after that.
I had made all the usual water checks beforehand and everything was OK so I feel I must have taken out out just in time!
I had used it in an upright position but thought that with all the various opening it would be fine, looked very realistic, probably would have been better laid down so the water had a better chance of flowing through it!
Anybody want to buy a resin log?

Mart F - it looks a bit different to the sort that I have, and the one on the left is actually designed to be laid horizontally, so the entire back is just open. Luckily I've had no problems at all, and the fish love swimming in and out of them.
Tonka - Luckily my bf is a carpenter/shop-fitter/general fix it man and I'd trust him with fixing anything, so I knew he'd do a good water tight job :)
Ann - thank you hun, I'm really chuffed with it :) Not bad for 10 weeks old either! (The tank, not me obviously roflmao )

A shot of my Roma 240 now it has been relaid after the disaster with the Silvertip Tetras. To catch them meant stripping the tank right down to the sand so it was a golden opportunity to change various things as plants and logs were put back in. Now the substrate food has been taken up by plants I used about 10 JBL Kugeln Balls to perk them up and the approach seems to be working well.

The carpeting plant, Sagittaria subulata, has grown and spread even more in the 10 days since the photo has been taken. It's so dense now the Corys struggle to get through it to the sand - going to have to thin it out at the next water change!

Personally I never have to do a gravel or sand clean anywhere in the tank, thats what the Corys and the Bladder snails are in there for - to clean up!
I've very recently pulled out most of my foreground plants to re claim the sandy beach for the Corys as you can see from the photo of part of the tank, the sand is as clean and white as the day I put it in in October last year.
As for fish poo, I never see any, if you are getting lots of it then it perhaps that says more about your feeding regime, you could be overfeeding - unless you have Plecs in the tank they are real Poo machines!
If you don't already, try reducing feeding to only every other day and then only sparingly, thats what I do and a lot of others on here do the same.

Just read your stock list in your signature you have a very good clean up crew, try cutting down on the feeding as suggested.

Finally did the first part of the re-scape of tank 1 today. Since I didn't really have anything in mind when I bought the rocks, it isn't ideal for the iwagumi I'm now experimenting with. Changes from before include: moving the vallis into a wall down the back, and pulling out all the e. densa. So the balance in the tank will have no doubt changed and I'll give it a week before I decide if I need to fert it.
Note one guppy is still in there. I chased it around for a while but couldn't net it. In that case it can keep pretending to be a minnow.
Wonder if this is worth starting a tank log for, since I never did originally for this tank. I feel a substrate change to something much darker would help, and then I'd carpet plant it.

GW, I think for that effect you need a deeper substrate and for the rocks to start not so close to the left of the tank.

I could stop being lazy and start that new tank log... but for now I'll just say I ordered a big bag of white gravel which I think would complement the rocks. I want to get it less two dimensional too, by having a non-level base although I've not given thought to how I'm actually going to do that yet. Would it hold if I simply pile the gravel? I'm thinking the rocks would look nice if I can get algae/moss or whatever growing on them, to give them a weathered effect. Aiming to pick up more pieces on Thursday.

Forgot to say thanks for the nice words. The tank is just annoying me at the moment, the hair algae has returned so I've currently reduced the lighting and upped the easy carbo. Just feel like I wana rip it all out and start again, Which may be happening soon anyway as I might just have found my rio 240 that I've been searching for thanks to someone on here :)

With hair algae you need to up the lighting, not lower it, and try and work out where the excess nutrients are coming from thats feeding it. It looks great and certainly not a mess!
Saw the baby sword, it's a good size, hopefully they will arrive tomorrow.
We are never satisisfied with what we have in this hobby, it's never ending!

Oh I thought excess light was a factor! I will up it again then. I have high nitrates and phosphates in my tap water so its probably that.
Your right I'm never happy with it, always changing it around but that's why I love this hobby and planted tanks. Fake plants would be so boring!

My Blackwater tank, redmoor root wood, Indian almond leaves and also a few oak leaves and red moor break offs as bottom debrit.
I also collect heaps of different mosses, from all over the place. Some I find myself, some I swap and some I purchase from other hobbyists. Usually I only get very small amounts, say a thimble full, so I need a small tank to help grow them on and to see if they will thrive under water, allot of my mosses usually start out life on land. it just happens that some do very well underwater as well.

Plants Ill try remember....On the left its camboda (Dobbies), Sagittaria subulata Dwarf Grass dotted (Ebay last trading post) about and the stuff along the back is eleocharis vivipara tall hairgrass (Plants Alive), tall plant on the right is echinodurus rose (Dobbies) im sure and the other near the plant pot was mis labelled from Dobbies so not sure of the name its nice though! Hope it doesnt grow to tall! The other grass at the front was from dobbies as well cant remember the name they do 3 for £10 on the potted plants !

The one in the left of the picture is Cabomba feathery leafy one and the other side tall broad leaf is echindorus rose. Not sure if you meant left of tank or left of picture :)

I'd like to have it fully planted but it has 5 silver dollars in, so not much chance there. love the fully planted tanks, they look great! I've added both a day and view, the night view is on until about 1 then the tank goes completly dark, tired to simulate moonlight, as much as possible.

Picture of how my tank now looks - been steadily increasing the blackwater look. Not a great quality photo but best an iphone could do! The blackwater effect does't really show in the photo. Some of the vallis at the front has gone a bit wild and needs a good gardening session too.

I can't remember whether or not I've contributed to this thread previously. Anyway, here are my two South American(ish) tanks :
This one holds: a pair of Electric Blue Rams, three Farlowella, about thirty Rummynose Tetra, and a bunch of Sakura shrimp ...

The dangly root things are from Amazon Frogbit - in fact I'd just cleared a bucketfull into the compost bin and noticed that there was probably enough light now getting to the tank bottom for a decent piccie. So I grabbed the opportunity before the canopy closes in once again!
Apart from (very) occasionally wiping the front glass and lightly hoovering above the front couple of inches of floor with my water-change hose, mainly to get rid of the Assassin snails' most recent victims, I don't clean it. New leaves are simply piled on top of the old ones.
In fact you've just caused me a pang of guilt : other than checking conductivity and pH, before each weekly water-change, I realised that I hadn't looked at the tank's general water chemistry for ages - well over a year. So I thought I'd better, at last!

Wow my frogbit used to get long roots but nothing on that scale, and now doesn't seem to grow that much, mainly since I started using liquid carbon. I think the tank looks stunning. I get paranoid about leaving almond leaves in but now I have seen that won't be as concerned,

Not dne a full clean out for a wile, jus been doing the usual w/c but jus give my tank & fluval filter a gd seeing to, my intake was blocked with lots of debris, its all sorted now & it's made me wanna pop in to maidenhead :) I have 4 swordtails from fry 1 female 3 male they are starting to harass her is it best to buy another female, or i could take her to another tank wich only as 1 male in ? This is mine as it stands. Used to have about 3 times the plants at one stage but a majority of them just weren't having it and went brown and started to rot in the water so I had to remove them...leaving what you see here which seems to be growing ok so far.
Still no fish yet...finding a good LFS is proving difficult

I would have put a pic up, but the whole tank went belly up, so got an empty 15l tank that's going to get upgraded to a new 24l Tank ether today or tomorrow, got new Tank, bigger filter & lighting system in spare room. Will definitely put some pics up once it's done though.

Is that going to be a brackish or marine tank because it looks like it's full of coral sand and rock - if it's for freshwater this will cause mega problems with PH levels.

No it's white gravel and the big rocks are ocean rock. My ph is at 7.2 and has remained at that for the last 3 days it's been in. I've been informed the ocean rock might cause the ph to raise so I will continue to check it. The previous owner had cichlids in it. Yes it's for freshwater an there are already fish in it. Gourami's Tetras and Khuli loach

Not yet :) Just ordered my very first tank and cabinet (Fluval Roma 200) today as well as some accessories... should have everything together by end of week so will have plants ready then too if I order them later this week and then start the fishless cycling. Hope it won't take too long ... but gives me plenty of time to think about my fish combinations I suppose *grin*
As soon as it gets here I'll start a log :)

Please find a pic of my new Vision 450 - all live plants with in the main run of the mill fish, Clown Loaches, Ottos, Cory's, Buenos Airies Tetra's, golden Minnows,Cherry Barbs, Neon tetra's Platy's. Probably will add a pair of Blue Rams in the future along with some more Cherry barb's. Been going about 6 weeks now after the first tank leaked - gggrrrrrrr.

Thankyou very much, I'm currently running an external filter with uv clarifier but when this picture was taken I was running an internal 3 sponge 1200lph filter by all pond solutions with a spray bar to soften the flow as the flow rate was not adjustable.

Here's an updated photo of my Discus tank, they are in a 5ft x 2ft x 2ft yet they all squeeze into one corner - could have got them all in a 2ft! *grin*
The second photo was taken during their weekly 50% water change, although I've just upped it to 70%.

Quick shots of my marine tanks this morning.
M1 is looking a bit empty right now, as I had sold a huge lump of Xenia that was in the back middle. The other bits I'm sure will grow to take its place soon enough I'm sure.
M2 also looking a bit bare, but this is a longer term tank as I'm letting zoas spread around. There are some rescued mushrooms, star polyps and some LPS in there too, but not of note.
M3 is looking much more active now. It is mostly a mushroom tank, with a tiny splodge of xenia and bigger splodge of star polyps.

Got rid of all the plastic ornaments I had. Swapped out normal gravel to eco-complete, 2 pieces of redmoor wood, and a 81 plant collection + java moss.
Just got to wait for it all to grow now

not enough ian, probably 30 now… although Im slowly getting the go ahead to get more in there. Pair of moori's next. There are a lot of juveniles in there, 4 red empress which will get to around 6 inches so they'll fill in a bit.

I recommend using fire extinguishers to provide Co2 which cost a lot less than to CO2 units you normally buy. Most don't hold much but a 2kg Co2 fire extinguisher is only a couple of feet tall whilst holding 2kg or Co2 which lasts ages. They are about £10.00 for 2kg Co2 extinguishers due re-painting or £20.00 for good units. I can still get them so if anyone needs any, let me know. thumbsup

Not a new tank, just a redesign. Juwel Rio 120 Bit of a crypt, anubias and sword thing going on. Lots of hidey holes. Home to... 1 male Kribensis 1 female Convict 5 sterbai cory's 5 or 6 Khuli loaches Pair of BNP's that will hopefully breed. Variety of snails, Nerite, rabbit, MTS, Apple. More to come to undecided on what to get.

so my current Yellow Honey Gourami Tank (where Gourami is not Gourami at all, it is Colisia, but in no way it changes the fact I love that fish)

My first tank, as reinvented now that I have lots of tanks!
You can see almost all of the inhabitants: all 6 Phenacogrammus interruptus (Congo tetra) all 6 Phenacogrammus aurantiacus (another tetra from the Congo) all 5 Hypoptopoma cf. guianense (giant oto) 2 of 4 Panaqolus sp. L397 (little stripey pleco)
I think there's a Synodontis nigriventris (upside-down cat) somewhere in there too, but I've only seen it once in 4 months...
I should have prepared the tank a bit better by cleaning the glass etc - I was just lying on the sofa and thought it looked quite nice so took a pic!

Having read that I can deploy flash without terrifying the occupants, I tried this evening. Camera was at ISO200, f8 and shutter speed of 1/125 sec' and with a flash off to the right of the 125l, and the other hand held to the left as the main light. Main light is fired off a pc synch cord and the fill (manual 1/8 power I think) is fired as a slave reacting to the main flash firing. Lens is a 50mm f1.8.
This was a test so next time I'll clean the glass, use a light stand and a diffuser for the slave lamp. Anyway, enough rabbiting and on with the fish.
That is a Siamese algae eater (if you are referring to the fish with a nose to tail stripe). 'Algae' was shy to start with with but now comes to the glass to see what is happening.

Yes that one is a glass cat. I have five and they look great in a shoal.
They wriggle as they swim and can turn on a sixpence.

Here is my 150l community tank effort. Just added the Fluval 206 external filter yesterday, what an improvement. Just need to sort out my rubbish back drop, I cant seem to get rid of the water between it and the tank. Thanks for looking. (sorry for the poor picture)

Our pygmy gourami love the thick vegetation on the left, hoping our fry will survive in that jungle I created 4 of our guppies are getting ready to drop lol

Here are my tanks: 1. AquaOne 320 cube (28l) with Danio margaritatus (CPD) and Boraras brigittae. It has been running for almost 5 years now but got moved a couple of times. [attach=1] 2. Fluval spec (7l) for raising the CPD fry, empty at the moment but a number of fry is ready to move on from their plastic pots soon.

Mine pales in comparison to all of these in terms of a sense of completion (I think it might be because mine doesn't look green! or organised but I don't know)... Anyway, here it is:
My 4ft long, 1ft deep (front to back), 1.5ft tall, 170litre tank that I've had set up for about 3 and 1/2 months now. It has been a gradual process as I've been limited to my funds but it's getting there *grin*

I've stopped dosing ferts now as I had that algae problem mentioned, which I think I caused through adding nitrogen. There's a Tetra fine plant substrate under the sand and the plants should be tucking into that by now. So no more ferts for now.
It's a 200 litre tank and I have CO2 injected at about 3 bubbles per second. It's one of the Sodastream setups - really good piece of kit. They put the price of refills up in Argos lately so I might look into a more economical solution, but it works for now.
Since I spent that time tackling the algae problem I've switched off two of my four tube lights, so I'm down the lower end of the lighting scale at the moment. This does not seem to affect the plants at all, they keep growing.

I hadn't done many new things with the tank lately due to that algae thing - so it was all put on hold.
I've still only got 11 fish in there lol - but they seem to love it and have really got used to me now.
I'm going to try to track down around 6 congo tetras next - but I need to research what ratio of male to female I need, if that's something I need to work with.

My new 400 litre custom built, the frame lifts off and the concealed top door opens like a car bonnet to reveal all electrics and the external filter. Then from the kitchen side it is only partially boxed in which allows easy access for daily feeding and weekly water changes.

From the living room side there are picture hook hangers in each corner of the picture frame, which allows it to simply lift off. Then you can open the panel above the tank just like a car bonnet, inside there on a shehlf is all the electrics and the filter. From the kitchen side you can still access the top sliding glass under the light (which is on a timmer), this allows easy access for feeding and water changes. thumbsup

Looking good :) just a note I don't use CO2 or a plant substrate and mine grow fairly well. But if yours an mbuna/Malawi (i cant remember which) setup then one them eats plants so plants are not used, also they prefer rocky setups :)

Looking good :) I wouldn’t add anymore though, as depending on the angels size when fully grown, plus you may need territory for the rams if they decide to breed ;)

The rams are paired up and already have their territory, they've split the tank into two. One pair on the left, one pair on the right. Particularly the corners where they have dug down into the sand.

Hi guys How much of a water change is needed in these heavily planted tanks. I've seen some youtube videos where the owner said that he never done water changes due to the plants absorbing all the nitrates.

There is the Walstad method which uses plants as the filter i believe, but generally i do around 30% changes weekly. The changes aren’t to bring the nitrates down but to replenish any nutrients that have been used up, as well as removing any hormones, waste etc

Full tank shot... set up a month or so now, new Malawi cichlids set up.
Tank and cabinet are custom built, 99 x 26 x 26, sumped. 1200l total volume.
Believe it or not, there's just over 50 fish in there! Need more rock and lights, which I'm ordering tomorrow :)

This is my custom made corner tank with homemade cover (now looking a bit tired). It's just under 200 litre capacity and filtered by an eheim pro 4+ 250 with 3x under tank heatmats which do a good tidy job. Lighting is by cheap ebay 5v RGB led strips and an old hot water/heating cotroller for timing functions. [attach=1]

About time I uploaded to this thread!
Tanks 1, 2 & 3 house Guppies, Swordtails, Opaline/Golden Gourami, Albino & Peppered Corydoras, Bristlenosed Plecos, Mollies, Whitcloud Mountain Minnows, Platies, Black Tetra, Kuhli Loach and various snails. All using homemade filtration systems and LED lighting. The cabinet is in my utility room and behind it is a loo/wet room.
Tank 6 was something I found thrown out down the road and currently has Betta called Barry with some Neon Tetras and various snails. The filter is one of those built in over the top set ups which I have customized and the lighting is using an LED bulb from Poundland.
Sorry for the image quality, been a long while since I’ve picked up a camera for photos. Also Tank 3 is a bit messy due to the plecos having a little feeding frenzy
I've got a few more to add to this thread in the future :)

Here is my attempt at an aquascape. It's my first tank (only 125 litres) and never done this before, so have made heaps of mistakes, not least was considering what substrate would be visible through the glass at the bottom and putting the sand beach layer deeper there *oops* All rocks and plants are from Aquarium Gardens. The filters were already fully cycled with a large koi in the tank, so no issues so far with water quality adding the new fish. I have 5 rummy nose tetras, 5 cherry barbs and 3 dwarf neon rainbow fish so far. I plan to add a few more so each kind has a shoal of at least 6 once I'm happy everything remains fine with the tank.
I've also just bought a glass inlet and outlet pipe for the filter which I haven't fitted yet so that will look nicer. Considering a blue sea looking background for the back of the tank so the wall doesn't show through it, but not sure yet. Don't want it to look fake. My partner says it looks like I just dumped some rocks in there roflmao

I think it's a fantastic effort, I would paint the back and sides with matt blackboard paint which can be removed if required in the future. Regarding the front where the sand looks a bit messy, I would cut up a cheap tupperware box or bowl to create a barrier to retain the sand then back fill with gravel against the glass front.

The first two pics are of my previous tank, Juwel Lido 120. Not the most recent pics but in an earlier shape and form.
Pics 3 & 4: I've recently got a bigger second-hand tank, Rena brand, nearly 200litres, and moved all my lifestock over. Its a simple tank with endlers, 1x bristlenose, cherry shrimps & amano shrimps and some assassin snails, plus easy to grow live plants.

My current aquarium, soon to be joined by an identical one that will house the Kissing Gourami that are in here causing chaos - they are called vettel & Hamilton since they spend alot of time chasing each other, Hamilton likes to view himself in the mirror side and vettel throws tantrums and ends up hanging onto the Pleco's tail til shaken off, then Vettel & Pleco retreta to a safe distance and give each other the evil eye
I digress...the aquarium is 84 litre, live planted, silica sand & gravel...Neons, Black Neons, Pristellas, Bronze Corys, Pleco...and Vettel & Hamilton
