Title: Ben's South American Catfish resurgence
Post by: bwarwicker on March 11, 2019, 09:12:27 pm
Here's the plan. I've finished setting the tank up this evening so I can start the cycle once the ammonia and test kit arrives. I will then look to rebuild my Cory stocks along with a few other weirdo cats until the tank is full and then start on the next tank  *grin*. Having kept 20+ species of Cory in the past and bred a fair few, I'll be looking to do the same again, searching for rarer varieties as I get deeper into it.

The main mission is true Julii. Never seen them in the south West before so it will be a tough ask!

Try Aqualife Leyland http://www.aqualifeleyland.co.uk/ the c. julii are in stock and they send fish by post (courier).
I've used them twice so far and all fish have arrived safely and in great condition.

Hope it helps

Or maybe Ian or Lee have got some??
Or all three, good breeding selection then. ;) :)

Buying online is easy! I like to support my locals, there is a store in Bristol I reckon could sort me out, I seen on Facebook a while back they claimed they had true Julii. I will take a trip to pier aquatics at some stage and throw in a few detours to get some nice fish.

My problem at the moment is the tank isn't cycled but I want to start 😂. Zero patience!

Following along with interest, looks like you haven't lost your aquascaping skills with your enforced break, looks great. What size is the tank?

Thanks, I'm quite pleased with how it looks. Looking forward to seeing it clear. This tank is 2ft x 2ft, 160l

The “julii” that Aqualife have pictured on their website right now are trilineatus. They’re a good shop, but like most, they sell trilineatus as julii.

So funny I've visited Aqualife with Paul in 2016. Noticed they have an awesome collection of Corys but all are in displaytanks that have gravel in them.

Think you're right about the julii but I was told on Planet Catfish there are julii with reticulations instead of spots as well.
Only the catching locality can tell for sure.
The knowledge of the Aqualife-crew was quite enormous (aren't they in the British Catfish Association or so?) so I doubt they make the same mistake as all other LFS's

No Cory no glory

I also would find it strange if Aqualife have it wrong, maybe the image is wrong. I'm due to speak with Steve on Friday as I'm expecting a delivery of some cory which Steve said would be in stock this Friday.

I must take a trip to one of these shops at some stage. I went to rare aquatics which I enjoyed but I don't think they're in operation these days.

Anyway, a question. Test kit arrived today and I need my memory restoring on water hardness. Results as follows:
PH - 7
Kh - 3
Gh - 4
How do these results translate into super soft, soft etc.?

They also have a picture of Synodontis “petricola” that looks very doubtful. I’ve seen incorrectly identified fish on their site before, and in the shop. No shop is perfect. :)

I spoke to a guy in the MA near me and he said they find it almost impossible to buy pure synos. Most from their approved suppliers are hybrids. Not a fan of that at all!

Curiously (?) Aqualife have just posted their catfish stock list on Facebook. Trilineatus is mentioned, julii isn’t.

They actually had both in recently, not sure if they have any true julii left. I'm there this weekend for the convention so will have a look.

Cycle is underway. Hopefully in 2-3 weeks time I'll be a Cory owner again!

Cycle is flying. Should be good to go by the end of next week I think! Filter wasn't as dead as it should have been!

Sounds good, It's amazing how resilient the munchers are, especially the nitrite munchers. :)

It was the nitrite I was impressed with. I'm a few days away I think.

Well done, looking forward to seeing your tank progress, I'm thinking that a 2' cube will be my upgrade.

Back from a few shops I got the wife to drive me too, with the promise of Roast Beef. 1st stop was my favourite shop, the aquatic store in Bristol. Always has been my choice and it looks like it will continue to be! The other two were a little dirty or boring.

Anyway, I have returned with Cory species 18&19, Arcuatus and Habrosus 😁 I'll get some pictures once they are settled in tomorrow. I suspect I'll loose one of the Arcuatus as it was stuck in the creases of the bag when I got home and seems to be struggling.

Need to put on a bit of weight. No chance of photographing the Habs!

Fingers crossed for the arcuatus (I assume you used Melafix to lower stress). How many did you get of each?

5 Arcuatus and 6 Habrosus. Arcuatus looked much better this morning. The one that was struggling on its side seems to be fine now. I haven't used anything in the tank yet as I prefer not too. The logic behind it is it would be better long term to not use treatments in this kind of case.

These are c020 buddy. True Arcuatus now have been allocated to a different fish

I'll never keep up with these name changes! I'll have a look in the Ian Fuller book later to have a read. What's the difference, location? Are true Arcuatus in the hobby?

Funnily enough maidenhead aquatics get them in semi regular, but don't be surprised to pay 20 quid each for them.

They also get pretty big.
