Title: "Whale and Dolphin Killing" Festival

Just seen a picture of a "whale and dolphin" killing festival in Denmark which was posted on facebook. (Without sounding too much like a PETA representative, That is completely disgusting! Literally hundreds of bodies lined up on the beach, according to wikipedia over 1000 are killed each season. They use boats to force them near the shore then kill them. It made me physically angry that this is allowed to happen and the locals say its part of a "tradition". Nothing short of barbarianism.
How can this happen in this day and age?
(Sorry feel better now having a bit of a rant and spreading awareness of this atrocity)

I agree, it's not very nice.
But you could say, that millions of fish are killed each year for us to eat.

Do they eat them, or just kill them. If they eat them, is it any different to eating fish? Not saying I agree with it though.

Personally i dont eat fish, but there it does not reach supermarkets there and are described as non-commercial and according to wikipedia:

So i assume less are being killed for food and more for "fun".

I do have to agree that making a tradition and festival out of it is wrong. Doing it for fun is also wrong. But as I said in my first post, there arguments for and against.
I don't eat fish either, vile stuff! XD

Being from Grimsby I can't really avoid the white stuff, not that I want too I love a nice piece of Haddock, Just like pork beef and chicken. But from what I see this is just a celebration stemming back from a time of a great gathering of food to see them through the coming months. I don't really see a place for it in the current age just like I don't see a place for fox hunting.
Just my opinion though ;)

Deep breath.........I do think that we in our privileged position are far to quick to condemn things that be see as being inhumane and barbaric while unwittingly supporting such things.As a nation we buy almost unbelievable amounts of chicken which has been raised in barbaric conditions but when we see it nicely packaged in the supermarket think " Oo thats good value" with no thought for how it was raised.Danish bacon is the same with sows kept in crates with no room to move or forage naturally but we buy it without a thought for the poor piggys. How many people walk around in nice branded sports wear or cheap supermarket clothes and care about the 7 year old third world child who lives under a tarpaulin in a shanty town with no running water or proper sanitation who made them???Or about the very high suicide rate at the Chinese factory where the workers have to work 18 hour shifts to make I phones. I used to take my air rifle to my allotment and shoot wood pigeons for the pot and rats(not for the pot) and was reported by a Barber jacket,Hunter boot wearing Labrador owner for killing defenseless animals because it was cruel.Now she is complaining she has no cabbages and her compost heap is full of rats and what are the council going to do about it.....Priceless. I personally do not agree with killing so many whales and dolphins if they are not going to be eaten but do we really have the moral high ground to condemn them with the amount of food,both animal and vegetable we waste because we don't fancy it or its a day past its sell by date.?? An old Nigerian man once told me "Remove the speck of dirt from your own eye before you go poking around in some one else's"

It actually just got banned in Japan this year. Not due to protest - but more to do with increased levels of mercury in their system making them unsafe to eat.
Guess mercury is good for something afterall.

I get what you're saying but when you take in consideration the amount of poverty, wether it be here in the UK or elsewhere in the world unfortunatly non-free range foods are necessary to keep prices down for us, without it a lot more people will go hungry. For the sweat shop workers i'd like to say i dont own no piece of clothing which is from the big sweat shop brands, i have a pair of running trainers as its better for my feet but thats all. Im not saying the rest of my clothes dont come from sweatshops as its hard to tell but there is no way i'd pay £60 for a well know rain jacket which had trended recently when it has been made for less than £1 with probably less than 10p going to the worker. Sweatshops are another unfortunate necessity as in many LEDCs there are no government handouts, no council houses or job seekers allowance, if they didnt have those job opportunities available they'd be in a considerably worse situation than they are in.
(I'd just like to reiterate that even though i dont agree with sweatshops and non-free range foods they are a necessity, but i still dont think that killing slaughtering tonnes off dolphins and whales for fun is a necessity in this day and age. Maybe if they killed one or two for food but to name it a festival is even worse.
